Remington 700 VLS in 6mmBR

I would like to explore the 6mmBR but do not have the funds for a custom gun and was wondering if a factory Remington 700 VLS could be smithed to this caliber economically? What caliber would you start with and what modifications would be necessary. Does any one know of a smith who has done this?

My advise is to save your money, pick a competent and recommended rifle smith or send the rifle to Douglas, Hart or other major barrel maker that specializes in re-barreling.
I have a Rem700 short action that I sent to Douglas for a 6mm-284 Barrel and it was done fairly economically. Mind you the action was already trued and this rifle shoots very well.
All Douglas did was remove the previous barrel, and re-install a new frechly chambered stainless XX barrel in the caliber of my choice.

Some ballpark figures for your project -
1. Action truing - $150
2. Bush firing pin - $48,Gre-Tan)
3. Custom barrel - $200-$250
4. Fit & Chamber above - $140
5. Tune factory trigger - $25
6. Glass bed stock - $50-$125

Most factory actions will benefit from being trued, but it's not always necessary to get decent accuracy - depends how good/bad your action is in its stock condition. Trouble is, when an action is trued - including chasing/truing the threads in the front receiver ring - barrels with factory dimension threads will be too loose to fit. So, if you pay good money to have a custom barrel fitted without truing the action, then find that accuracy leaves a little to be desired, and then decide to have the action trued, that new custom barrel isn't going to fit anymore - unless there's plenty of shank to be cut off and re-threaded. It's probably better to have the action trued to begin with. I included bushing the firing pin because it's almost always going to be a necessary step to prevent primer cratering, often even with moderate loads.

i have a 6mmbr model 700VLS i am in australia and wanted to get a Remington in 6mm BR the way i went was to get a 243model700 VLS and have the action trued and pillar bedded then the original barrel was rechambered to 6mmBR with a 271Neck and the barrel chopped back to 22" it is awsome to shoot and it will shoot .3 all day this is all it needs to shoot as it is a varmit rifle and it shoots under 1" at 300 yards in good conditions with Sierra 55gr BlitzKing's how about that a 1in9.25 barrel shooting flat based 55gr 6mm bullets well for hunting. most people will say not to use the Remington barrel but if it is trued up and chambered well it will be a great hunter. remember that some people actualy use there rifles away from the range and shoot real animals the 6mmbr 700VLS is awsome and it puts the 55gr Sierra out at 3400fps with Benchmark and Rem Primers in Lapua cases without bushing the primers the cases have been fired 7 times now and have only been necked am going to body die them next firing

I Hope this helps just do what you wanted to do and when you wear the Remington barrel out then get a14-12 twist benchrest barrel and keep shooting

If i make sure they are all at the back of the mag it works fine but i mainly use it for spotlighting and use a davidson single shot follower
