Remington 700 Serial Numbers

What's the year of manufacture,, or age of a serial numbered R700 action "662xx61".
And, are all R700 40x single shot actions Stamped "40x" or "40XBR" on the reciever?
or
Do some older 40x's single shot's just have "Remington 700" Stamped on the reciever?

With Remingtons you have to go by the date code on the barrel. At least I've never been able to find a list of serial number dates.
Thanks MadAlaska, . But I only have a receiver, no barrel to go by.

This may be of some help.. I'd be willing to bet its a very early 700 receiver..

#1-The 7 digit receivers started later '67 I believe and continued until the A prefix in about '74? Have several 7 digit receivers but only currently 1 complete rifle. It is 6,240,XXX and was built in March '69. So yours is considerably later than that!

#2- I believe the XBR designation was started in later 70's and applied to the 20" Benchrest rigs. The 27.5" barreled rifles were still called XB? Have or have owned numerous 40-X/XB/XR but mostly rimfires built prior to '78. Believe all the XBR marked guns are indeed single shot only. I am not a die hard 40-X user collector so others may have better info that this? When we talk 40-XB the B is the suffix after serial number to designate it is based off the 700 action! The 40-X is based off the early 722 action and has just serial number on left side with no letter suffix. Hope that makes sense.

#3- If it isn't marked 40-X or 40-XBBR on the left side of receiver than it IS NOT a 40-X!!! If it is marked 700 than that is exactly what it is!

About all I can help you with!
Respectfully,
Dennis

If you call Remington I'm pretty sure they will tell you. I have a 22 rifle that I called about and they were happy to help. ;)
