Remington 700 questions

I see several used 700s advertized as converted to single shot. What exactly does that mean? Installation of a Davidson ramp, replacement stock without a magazine cut or welding metal to the magazine cut of the action itself? I suspect it could mean any of the above and of course I would ask the seller - I'm just trying to educate myself. What does the Davidson ramp look like and does it materially stiffen the action?

I'm thinking about hanging a heavier custom barrel on an older 700 SA and am concerned that free floating said barrel will put too much strain on the action. Is there a barrel contour/weight below which this ceases to be an issue. Sleaving the action will create more bulk than I wish for this type of varmint rifle.

Thanks for the great site,

Robin

Some of them will have a ramp glued in and others just set there. No one welds to the action that I can think of.. The ramp looks like a flat piece of metal, usually Aluminum.
I has no effect on stiffening the action... I have a few 1.250's and 2, 1.350 hanging off 700 actions and don't see a problem with the weight, and I don't glass any of the barrel tight, they are all free floating from the lug to the end.....

Kampfeld Customs does a permanent conversion to single shot via welding.
I have hung a 27' 1.250' straight off a short action with no ill effects I'm aware off.
I'm guessing the weight of the barrel for a portable varmint gun your're talking about wouldn't be a concern anyway. If it's not a switch barrel set up, bed a couple of inches of the barrel shank for some extra support.
