Remington 700 extractor

Anyone know the dimensions to cut for a 223 size c clip extractor. I'm building a inline muzzleloader and want to use small rifle primers in cut off 223 cases for ignition. I want to convert the bolt to extract the cut off case.

Are you talking about using a Remington style extractor? It’s not a simple straightforward cut it has some subtle features that allow it to function properly Maybe I misunderstood your question

Yes a Remington style extractor it only needs to slide over the rim and pull the shortened case out no ejector or anything else. I'm ready to take an extractor out and measure it but I thought someone might know

It is not a simple recess. Better off going with a Sako or mini m16.

If you have a Remington bolt on hand take a look at the recess and you will see it’s kinda complicated process

Have you considered a module set up? A bud tried your setup and went down a rabbit hole because of varying case head thickness. He wound up putting each case in a collet and using an end mill to make that thickness consistent. That was just the beginning of his problems. He converted to the module setup.

edit : my inline uses a sako with modules, no issues.

i just took an extractor out of a 223 bolt I can see what they did and it's what I thought I would see. But I like stuff like this so I think I'm going to put release agent in there and make a silicone impression of it get a better look at it.

I remember Stiller wrote about how to use a cutter similar to a woodruff key and cut the recess and how to clock it. Long time ago.

I believe a cutter like this in the correct dimensions would cut the recess to allow the extractor to expand in its given slot
This particular one is called a T-slot milling cutter
Having a Mill would be necessary

Without a Mill, An internal groove cutter in a Lathe might work too
Dialing the bolt on an eccentric path like a camshaft

A mill with a slot cutter would def be better allowing you to slot your dimension more precisely
in the X,Y directions

so simple to put a hankins plug and use 223 module

The use of shell casings was one of the initial experiments to do away with shotgun primers, IIRC, around ten years ago. It created more problems than what it was worth. The module system isn't perfect but it does give consistent ignition. Eventually, standard bolt face actions went away also. My newest SML based on the Summit action has a bolt face cut for modules.
