Remington 700 bolt handles???

T 700

Silver $$ Contributor
I come across a older model 700 ( B prefix) short action that has a smooth bolt knob. I was wondering why these was done this way, and what someone more knowledgeable than me knows about this.

Does this affect the value?

Thanks T 700

They made a lower priced 700. I think it was called the 78 ????
Exactly my thoughts. The Remington Sportsman 78 has a smooth non checkered bolt knob. I have one in .30-06. Check to see if the last four SN digits scribed on the bolt body match the last four on the action. If not the bolt is not original to that 700. The value would be affected, by how much?? It is possible a short run of 700's came with this handle.

As rayjay posted-
The Sportsman "78" was the ADL hardwood stocked,un-polished to be less expensive <$200 version of the 700 ADL walnut stocked rifles.
The bolt knobs of the 78's were not checkered & were smooth.

If the last 4 of the serial numbers match that are hand inscribed @ 6O'clock on the bolt body to the last 4 numbers of the 700 S/A receiver-someone grabbed the wrong bolt during assembly.
No big deal!

Your "B" pre-fix serial numbered 700 receiver is circa early 80's.

I currently have, and have had others in the past, M700 rifles that included properly serial numbered (matched to the receiver) bolts with smooth bolt handles.

They did not "somehow get mistakenly picked up from a Model 78".

I have also had M700 sporters (not Varmints), of ~1980's vintage, with polished blued barrels and no sights.

There are variants out there that you run across occasionally, that are totally factory issued rifles.

Thanks for the info, I will take another look at it, but I am petty sure it's a 700. I was thinking it might be a special run for a distributor or something.

This rifle is deeply blued with jeweled bolt in a nice ADL wood stock, it looks just like any other 700 except for the smooth bolt knob.

I checked the serial numbers and both match, so I guessing it was made this way.
