Remington 700 action side plug screws. What are they for?

So if you look at the older Remington 700 actions, there are two screws at the back of the left hand side of the action. They would appear to be plug screws, but for what? Were there side sight or scope mounts that were used?

Receiver sight base to facilitate mounting a match sight.

2each #6-48tpi,same thread/pitch as scope/open sight screws.

Thanks for the info. Kind of what I figured but not sure. I even asked Remington customer service once. They didn't have a clue.

The receiver sight base screw holes & bolt lock cuts in bolt bodies for bolt lock safeties went by the wayside after the "C" pre-fix serial numbered receivers of the late 80's.
