Remington 700 5R in 308

What is your bullet and powder of choice for this rifle

What I loaded for previous rifles w/168 sierras is not
looking that good. Does the twist rate and rifling design
change the game??? Are they more prone like a
different bullet than the 168 ??

I even shot some new Federal Match rounds w/168s and
1.5" at 200 was the best it would do.

These have worked well in my 5R with 168s:

N140 41.9
H380 43.8
IMR4064 41.6

I really like the 168TMK as it seems to perform better than the 168SMK at 600. I don't see a need to go to 175s at that distance.

In that particular rifle, I was thrilled with 1.5" at 300. Ecstatic!

Your mileage, of course, may vary.

This is my factory class egg gun. It has to be capable of 3/4 to One inch at 200. LDS

In my 5R, I've had the best luck with the 178 A-Max and Varget in the neighborhood of 43.6 grains, CCI BR2, Lapua brass. The 175 SMK with Varget is also consistently good.

Larry, I'm betting your barrel has a 1-12 twist? My 12 twist likes 155's with Win. 748, 46.0-47.0 in the lands..47.0 is almost a 100% fill and 748 meters like a dream.

I think Remington advertises the barrel to be 11.5. Thats what
made me wonder if the 168 was the wrong bullet. LDS

It's a 11:2.5 twist..43.1grs Varget, 168 A-Max, 2.800"

5 shot 1" groups a 300 yards.. best shooting factory rifle I've ever owned..

Sierra 175, Barnes 175 MB, Berger 175 LRBT, All shot very well.
H4895 with my 20" bbl but also shot real well with Varget but velocity was down compared to H4895.

IMO this barrel was made for the 175 smk. Several powders work well. Varget, Imr-4064, 4895, rl-15, imr-8208 and others. With 4064 being my favorite. I have found you can get them to shoot really well at a std coal of 2.80". No real need to load them long.

My Remington 700 5R likes 175 Nosler CC, & Varget. I've been hoping to come up with a good load for the 185 Berger Juggernaut, for longer range work. Yes, the "5R's " are advertised as 1-11.25 ' twist rate. Idaho-45

175 SMK CCI BR 43 gr. IMR4895 .012 off the lands

LScott: If the 700 is a Varmint 5R, I think the twist is 1:12". Also, if it is like the only one I've seen, the throat is so long that the only bullet you can get near the lands is the Sierra 180 MatchKing. Others, like the 190 SMK, will get to the lands, but the twist is not fast enough to stabilize reliably. If it's eggs at 200 yds, the Speer 125 TNT will shoot well at a good price, if you can get a load the rifle likes. Obviously also nowhere near the lands.

There is no "varmint 5R". It's either a varmint or a 5r. The varmint is a 12 twist but not 5r rifling. The 5r mil spec is 11.25 twist. Two complete different guns and barrels. But I agree the throat is looong!!

It is 11 1/4" twist from what I recall for the 308 and a 9" twist for the 223 in 5R Rifling

Looks like its a split on bullet weights 168 vs 175s. I sure
hope I can find the right powder to make the 168s shoot, because I bought a 500 box. LDS

Larry, Tho I've been shooting 175's out of my 5R-308, one of the best groups I've ever shot out of it was Sierra's "Accuracy load" of a 168 SMK over 42.0 grains of RL-15. So, If I had that many 168's, I'd try that for a good start. I agree with Josh, & Jackal about the 5R models, & the twist rates they mention! Remington 5R-308= 1-11.25", 223 Remington= 1-9".... I have one of each. Idaho-45

Larry. Keep us informed on your load development! I always look forward to other guys experiences, & load data, here. I've learned a bunch from you guys!!!!!!!!! Idaho-45
