Remington 700/40x ejector plug

Yeah I did that on a couple other rifles, seems a flush plug could be fitted and held in with the pin.
Perhaps a dummy ejector that retains the spring but is flush with the bolt face when extended.

Reason for retaining the spring is that someday you may want to reinstall the ejector. A 1000 rounds down the road the "plug" may not come out so easily without a little boost. Dummy could be exercised whenever you clean the bolt face to keep it freed up, just a thought.

Do it and your accuracy will TANK instantly. Happened to me in a 600-yd F Class match tonight. First 20 while a little gale was blowing - a 197. Second 20, nearly dead calm, I was ALL OVER the target. No consistency whatsoever. The ejector got stuck down in the hole on the last shot of the first string, or the first sighter on the second string. Tried to get it to pop out but it was a no go. It had happened to me once before during load dev. so as soon as I noticed the rifle had stop ejecting I knew why the rounds were flying wild.

I don't know exactly why this is, but you stop the spring-loaded ejector from pressing against the base of the case and you are DONE FOR, accuracy-wise.

I removed the ejector from all of my prone rifles, no problems.

One might notice it only with very accurate rifle/load setups, but the rifles it has happened to me on are very accurate (range between .25 and .5 at 100 with no wind). Without the ejector there is no way with a 700 bolt that you are seating the cartridge in the exact, same spot in the chamber every time.

I would just say, before you do anything semi-permanent to your very accurate 700, pop the ejector out and shoot a couple of groups and compare to previous.

Then I guess the firing pin slamming into the primer has no affect on the location of the cartridge.

Just got me wondering why the custom actions without a ejector shoot so good ???
Seems like the case is held tight against the bolt face no matter what as long as it's sized to the chamber..

I have built more than one Rem 700 with the ejector removed and had no issues with accuracy. Yes, they were benchrest rifles capable of winning matches. One of the reasons for removing the ejector is that the ejector is pushing (preloading) base of the cartridge and is contributing to the cartridge not being straight in the chamber and potentially causing accuracy issues. Just one more issue not to have to contend with.

I will be happy to listen if someone can give a reasonable explanation as to why not having the ejector in place would cause a rifle to not be accurate.

I'm guessing the explanation is that in my factory-reamed chambers the ejector pushes the case into the same position every time, which increases accuracy even if it is not perfectly straight. Or maybe it pushes it into "straight." All I know is the two nights ago I went from shooting right at 1 moa at 600 yds in a light gale to shooting 4 - 5 moa in the dead-calm, instantly, just because my ejector got stuck down in the hole, and that is the second time that has happened to me (accuracy went to hell instantly when ejector got stuck down in the hole).

I don't doubt that a gunsmith can build a super-accurate rifle based on a 700 action without an ejector. I'm just saying that, especially if you have a factory 700 (or 40X), I would determine the rifle's accuracy potential with the ejector in, then pop it out and see what happens, before you start making semi-permanent changes to the ejector.

Why not just cut the spring short enough to allow storage of the ejector in the hole flush with the bolt face. That way you can keep track of it.

I started this thread because when I was trying to find jam and touch lengths in my 222 the land marks on the bullet were only showing on one side of the bullet, like the cartridge was pushed off center by the ejector.
The rifle was grouping ok but several shots enlarged groups couldn’t be called.

So I removed the ejector and shot some loads that shot well before and some new COL loads. Much better results.
5 shot groups @ 100 yds.

I have a Shilen barreled Savage 222 that shoots smaller than this 40x that had the ejector removed day one.
I was thinking it’s a safety thing in case of a head separation and will look into what Al Nyhus suggested.
