Remington 597 anyone?

I bought my son a Remington 597 with a thumbhole stock that has the vents in the forearm and has a carbon fiber barrel a few years ago. He has shot it very little and seems like a dandy little 22. He is not much of a shooter but i did see some pretty good groups he shot at 50 yards at the club. It has not been shot in some time and i made a deaL with him and got it off him. Does anyone here have 1 or know much about them? I was wondering if the barrel is threaded on their as i have never seen it out of the stock. The carbon barrel on their i was told was a little special run they did and was wondering who might have made it for Remington because i was thinking that Remington surely did not produce these in house or did they? Also the trigger on these, does anyone make a nice after market trigger for these that i could install myself? How about barrels for these, is their anyone out their also making barrels out their for them if i should choose to maybe purchase 1 in the future. It has a little Nikon scope on it and i need to dig out and see what i have in ammo and see how this thing shoots for myself. Heck, maybe i will be lucky and it will have a decent barrel on it and only really need to find a descent trigger for it. So what do you guys think and spill some beans about them for me if they are good or bad.

Thanks,
Dan

You can get a new barrel here:
http://www.gunaccessories.com/volquartsen/Accessories%20Remington%20597.asp

I see a few other parts available out there too.
I am guessing you have the Volquartsen model and looks like they don't make it anymore.

I am not sure what you mean by having the Volquartson model. I bought this a few years back at a place here in Ohio called Dicks. Could you elaborate a little more on what you mean by the Volquartson model?

If you look up "Remington 597 carbon barrel" you get lots of returns on it. I am only guessing by the quick lookup and reading a few of the links. Can you post a picture of this rifle? It is a model 597 but it looks like a limited run with the custom barrel maybe made by Volquartson custom. I may be totally wrong here.

I am pretty sure it was a limited run and it is a nice looking little 22. I just have to think Remington sourced out the barrel on these and was wondering if anyone new any info on who made the barrel.

Here are some pictures of the rifle.

From end to end. The little scope i am selling on here is the scope that was on it. I am going to get something with a little more power for my eyes. So before i get and install another scope i am going to take it out of the stock just to check it out. I am sure the end that goes up into the receiver that you can not see is typical like others and is not carbon fiber. But all of the barrel that you see is carbon fiber from end to end with no break on it as you would see on some. I am stoked about getting some parts and getting the trigger tuned and set up to shoot. I think it will be a fine little squirrel getter when season opens back up later this year.

I was looking at the end of the barrel today and now i am kinda thinking that maybe it is not a true carbon barrel and maybe it has just an outer layer. Not sure and if i can,t come up with any info i think i am going to call Remington to suit my curiosity and hope they can tell me something.

I think you're right Dan. I don't believe that's actually a carbon wrapped barrel... Looks like a 'carbon fiber' finish on a steel barrel. I could be wrong, of course...

Yea, i believe you are right after really looking at it. I believe if i was a betting man i would bet it is not ;D I do need to get an after market part for the trigger and get it to where it is bareable. For me, nothing is worse on my mind than a crappy trigger. I think once i get that squared away and another scope on their i will have to ring it out and see what the Remy will do. I have had a boat load of Rugers and 1s from Clark or worked over by him and the Rugers i had where little lazers. All and all i think it will make a fine little squirrel getter this fall when the season opens back up.

You're lucky you can use semi-autos for hunting. In PA, I can't use any semi auto. That's why my 10/22 has a BR stock on it, and my Henry lever action 22lr (open sight of course!) gets all the squirrel hunting action!

When shooting today with 22lr, my friend tells me he has a 597 don't shoot it any more due to the crappy magazine hang ups. Anybody knows of a good replacement magazine and were to purchase, thanks.

Really, you are not aloud to use a semi 22 to hunt with for squirrels. What about ground hogs and so. Would you be aloud to use an AR to hunt with?

This might help

Also, plenty to learn about the 597 here

Hope it helps

No, NO, and definitely NO! (as long as you're trying to hunt legally :) )

That's the only reason I don't own an AR. Sure they're fun to shoot, but spraying paper with an AR kinda sucks (in most cases). I have bench guns to spray paper with... why buy any semi-auto to do the same thing? It took me a few years to convince myself to buy a 10/22 to play with. It's fun, but again, I can only use it to punch paper. If you hunt in PA... nothing automatic is allowed, not even a shotgun for small game.

WOW, that blows me away. I am not a deer hunter nor hunt turkeys and birds except crow. Shotgun, muzzle loader and revolver 357 and above are what you can use. Any kind of 22 in a designated area is aloud. What cracks me up is i can hunt ground hogs, coyote and fox with any kind of rifle here. Hell, when i first got into hunting ground hogs at about 20 i ran into the game warden here and hunted with him and he was using some big weatherby magnum while i was with him. We have a lake up the road with a boat load of property surrounding it that is huntable but you need to get a map that shows you the designated areas where you are allowed to use rifles. No rifles allowed for deer hunting.
