Remington 581 question?

A friend of mine showed up at the range yesterday with a beat up Remington 581 bolt 22 rifle. It has a decent trigger. Problem is: the bolt comes all the way out of the receiver when you pull it back during the normal functioning of the gun. My friend showed me a small hole in the stock where his dad used to stick a small finishing nail to keep the bolt from being withdrawn too far.
My question is: does this seem like a bolt stop issue to you folks? Or what? What say you? Thanks...

The normal way to remove the bolt is to push the safety forward and pull the trigger(at the same time) as pulling the bolt to the rear. I'd bet the trigger/safety was messed with in the past. BTW what brand of metal "10" rnd magazine do you have ? The only metal mags I've seen are the 5 rnd ones, the 10's have all been plastic.

For what ever reason the bolt stop-release pin is missing, its the pin sticking up on the top right of the trigger housing.

When the safety lever is pushed all the forward it pulls it down allowing the bolt to be removed. There is a return spring between the pin and housing. Both the pin and spring are available from Numrich ( parts 8, 9 & 55 if needed) http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/Remington-33454/Rifles-37895/581-39541.htm

Is that your photo?

No, I stole it someplace. That was actually a pic of a 788 trigger, the same as used on the 541-581 22s. I have five 541-S 22s and could have pull apart to show but you can't get a good look at the pin with the trigger installed....so the pic.
