Remington 541X Target rebarrel question.

This is for all you rimfire Gurus out there. I have a Remington 541X Target rifle and recently watched a video from Desert Precision, do a rebarrel job on a CZ457. He did away with the factory barrel and the pre-fitting process into the receiver, then threaded the inside of the receiver and trued the bolt face, threaded the barrel and set the whole thing up as you would a centerfire rifle. He also stated (and I've read this in countless areas) that the CZ457 action will except 22LR, 22Mag, and 17HMR cartridges. . .this has me thinking. Will this Remington 541X action I have except and function with a 17HMR cartridge? If so, I would love to have this type of action work done and rebarreled with a custom 17HMR barrel. I've had this rifle for a number of years and bet there hasn't been a brick of 22LR shot through it and 17HMR is a lot more appealing to me and would see much more use. Let me know your thoughts and opinions for this little project I have in my head. Thank you.

it should be able to be done. The cost would be $750 to $1000 to make the change. Then the value of the 541-X is gone. It may be better to sell the 541-X, current sell prices are running $650 to $750, maybe more if in very good condition. Then buy a CZ 17HMR or a Bergara BMR, BMR-X. Even better a Bergara B14R 17HMR.

Thank you for the reply - REALLY!!! I had no idea this rifle would be worth that price, and it is in very good condition with all the hardware. I'll have to look into this a little further. . .now my gears may be turning in a new direction for a farm gun. I live in Florida, and every year after hunting season is over I like to take all my guns out and give them a wipe-down with an oil rage and then arrange them all back in the safe. This one resides in the backside and I couldn't remember the last time it was ever shot and thought about making something new out of it - now maybe not!!!

I'd give Brian Voelker a call and see what he thinks. He reworked my 541X but didn't change it to 17HMR. He does excellent work on Remingtons like this
Is Brian still taking work ? I thought he backed off.

MarkS,

You were not kidding!!! For the hell of it, I popped onto GunBroker and there are a few in the $600.00 to $800.00 dollar range. . .and not to toot my own horn - but mine is in far better condition than those, except my stock is more blonde than the ones listed there. Thanks again for the heads-up.

Brian just re-barreled my 6 Creed a few months back and he had a back log. He’s still taking work, but don’t know if he takes as much as he used to. He just built a new shop a couple of years ago.

If it were me, I’d take the advice given here and get a new rifle in .17HMR. I love my CZ 457 Varmint in .17HMR.

Thanks for all the insight fellas. Not to fear. . .I don't plan on butchering this one. I will look into a CZ though. That is where my mind was at first and then I had the thought.

I had heard that too. I talked to him at ARA Nationals last fall and he's still taking work but how soon he can get to it depends on how much work he has to do on the farm
