Modern Winchester Low Wall Help

Just bought a modern manufacture Winchester 1885 Low Wall 17HMR. I've installed a Leupold fixed 12X, fine hair with a dot. I'll use this for gophers in Montana. I haven't shot it yet, I got it last Wednesday. I'll use it for gophers in Montana. I shoot my other rifles Cooper 17HMR, Ruger #1 17 Hornet and center fires off a good bench with a front rest and rear bag. This type of action is kind of new to me. Any helpful ideas would certainly be appreciated.

You can rest the forearm on a rest. Original rifles had the forearm attached to the barrels. The new low walls have a steel hanger that extends forward of the bottom front of the receiver. In theory, the barrel could free float but the gap between wood and barrel might be unsightly if spacing was overdone. But it’s something to consider. I would definitely send the trigger to Lee Shaver for a trigger job. Less than $100 if I recall correctly. He does a great job on them. At one point, Lee lapped barrels as well. Not sure he still does this but he knows what he’s doing. Not that your barrel needs lapping, but if you find it does, he would be a great candidate. Good luck with it!

This is likely the only thing it will need. I have had him do 3 triggers for me and they all were great.

Thank you, my friends. Lee was mentioned on some other forms also. I read some of the things he and others mentioned. He mentioned any work done on the trigger may / could lead to safety issues. Since this gun will be a "gopher gun" I will just adjust the trigger using the factory information. Now the trigger is breaking at 2 3/4 lbs. but not repeatedly. Looks like the temperatures (100 area) will drop next week, so I'll get to shoot.

Placing some Moly on the trigger / sear should lower the trigger another 4 OZ's.

I suspect that the "could lead to safety issues is a CYA statement in case something goes wrong and someone blames it on the trigger work. The ones he has done on mine has been 100% reliable. They all have consistent weight of pull after his work.

The moly mentioned above will lighten it a bit but it does have to be replied from time to time and I have never had any luck with it making a trigger pull more consistent. Use technical grade powdered moly or lock-ease will work also.

Nice gopher gun - I am envious.

I finally got to shoot the Low Wall yesterday. Temperature and wind both down, so a hurry up decision and thrash, thrash thrash getting ready. Only forgot spotting scope and targets, but I had some small orange spots and take my own supports, paper covered card board on 2x2 frames, with a PVC base I can set at any distance. Six rounds at 100 yds, it was 1" high, slightly smaller than 1" group. Minute of gopher, Federal V shock ammo. Like was mentioned above, it needs some trigger work or maybe I need to join a gym. Thanks guys for the encouraging words and positive comments.
