Remington 541 custom sporter problem

The small screw in front of the trigger guard will typically be a wood screw on a 541S from the factory. The modification is to drill through the stock where the factory wood screw is and a hole is drilled and tapped into the receiver. A 700 ADL screw that is typically 8-36, takes the wood screws place, and is fitted. The guard is also redrilled and recessed to take the larger #8 screw. The new “second screw” addition doesn’t have to be an 8-36 ADL screw. It can be an 8-24, or 8-32, that is the correct length. An 8 sized screw is typically used because there’s not much room on the receiver for a larger one.

Check the simple things first. Action screws, scope mounts and rings and integrity of the scope. Disassemble the bolt and check for crud that could be causing erratic firing pin fall. Last, give the barrel a proper cleaning and season it with a few shots before shooting a group.
