Remington 540x or 541T?

MIght have a chance to purchase the above. Which one would you prefer and why? Not for hunting, but might use it for 22 silhouette matches nearby or just plinking at the range. Both have open sights right now

Either will be more than accurate enough for Silhouette. Personally I would go with the best looking (subjectively) and get the sporter. Beautiful lines.

I agree about the best looking playing big part, but assuming similar condition, I'd probably prefer the 541T with a magazine over the single shot 540X.

For silhouette the 541T. You can shoot it in both classes, the 540X will be heavy enough that you would not be allowed to use it in Hunter Rifle class

Should have said target sights instead of open sights. The 541-T really looks nice, but I also like single shots too.

I have a 540-X; it's very accurate. Shoots 5 shot groups under a 1/2" at 50 and sub-moa at 100. It's quite heavy, and a fine looking rifle, too. Might not be the best for silhouette, but it would certainly be nice for the younger ones to hone their skills.

If you go with the 541 ge the new metal magazines from the gentleman on this forum. They are amazing and worth every penny.

I have 2 540x rifles one I shoot in silhouette with a scope to 200 meters of the bench, very accurate with good ammo. Best score 36 targets out of 40. nobody got 40 yet.
That is against voodu, anshutsz, 40x and win 52.
The other is a fully stock with original peep sights, like new condition. Have not tested it yet, but will soon....

I like the rifle. i worked the trigger to below 1lbs, must be very careful not to damage it.

Actually, Remington added the 2nd screw not too long after introducing the 541T model. I retrofitted several S & T models for the 2nd screw, which allowed proper bedding and floating the barrel. (Edited out magazine loading requirement)

I got mine shortly before they were discontinued, and had only one action screw. I later added the second screw and bedded the action the way Lones Wigger did his.

If the OP shoots NRA 1/5 scale matches, Smallbore hunting rifle requires loading from the magazine. So the sporter version would be legal for both the Hunter and Standard rifle categories in this respect as well as the weight limits.

You can single load into the chamber for a few years now. And single shot rifles in hunter are okay as well Only lever gun requires loading from the magazine, and even there there are people placing the round on the lifter and it is allowed

I love my 541s it shoots great. Beautiful rifle. It has the adjustable trigger but only one action screw

I have had 541S and 541T with two action screws and also with adjustable triggers, I have also seen 541S with only one action screw and the non-adjustable trigger.
I suspect that when they started the 541T version it was a matter of using whatever parts they may have had on hand and when they were used up the simplified production by going to only one action screw and the more simple trigger.

I posted earlier that I have my doubts that the 540X would qualify for Hunter class, if the OP is serious about wanting to use the rifle for silhouette he would be wise to go to the NRA site and get a copy of the rule book to see what it takes to meet Hunter rifle specs.

The biggest advantage to the 541T is that it could be used in Hunter and Standard class so that with one rifle you can shoot both classes unlike the 540X which could only be used for Standard class.

Not sure, never held a 540 nor a 541. Hunter weight limit is 8.5 lbs, 10 lbs 2 oz for standard. Most clubs relax the rules for their regular matches but at state or regional matches, rifle rules are enforced
