Remington 3 Rings of steel

I am sure there has been this same topic read several times before but here goes again. I have been in the shooting sport for 30+ years and about 2 years ago lost one of my best friends and gun smith to cancer. Being I am mechanically inclined and can do just about anything(you know jack of all trades master of none)I purchased a Grizzly gun smithing lathe and ran the barrel threading and chambering through my head a million times even dreaming about it. Well I purchased a short 700 action and aHart #17 max heavy varmint barrel with a 8" twist in 6mm , ordered reamers and a range rod to indicate the barrel from the bore. I did the usual squaring up receiver(recut threads, cut boltlugs and the same on the bolt and recut action face.(easy) Then I put barrel in lathe and indicated both breach and muzzle till there was no movement of the dial indicator. Cut thread tennon and threads then came the counterbore for bolt face. Now to get what I wanted to ask, Is it really nessesary to cut that counter bore. Because it really does nothing to prevent gasses from escaping. aqnd from looking at other actions they do not have these same counter bores. Examples are post 64 winchesters and savage and they claim savage has one of the safest actions on the market. So I am just looking for others input on this subject.
PS the rifle I put together is a Rem. 700 short chambered in 6mm 250 Ackley imp and bedded in a modified HS Precision police stock. Gun shoots literaly 1 tiny hole at 100 yards and I am very happy with my first try at chambering and fitting a barrel. My next project is going to be a short 700 mag action with a 9" twist barrel in 300 WSM.
I would greatly apreciate any input on that counter bore and if it is really nesassary.

The counter bore in the chamber end of the barrel encloses the nose of the end of the bolt. I believe it is an absolute necessity. What amount of time do you save not cutting it? 5 minutes? The possible consequences of not doing it is too great to think about.

I personaly don't think its needed or adds any sort of actual strength to the system , I have cut a cone rather than the counterbore in a couple rifles to help ease the feeding of short sharp shouldered rounds in long actions (220 SwiftAi) (6x284Ai) , if both gun I ran the pressures up enough to get loose primer pockets on the third reload with no ill effects on the action or bolt.
If setup properly you have no more or less of the case exposed with the Rem 700 countebored than you would with an old Mauser 98 or a new Bat with a coned bolt
As long as your running a safe distance of clearance from the bolt nose to the barrel I don't think their will be any issues.

The counterbore also serves as a leadin for cartridge feeding. If you omit it the rifle probably won't feed because it's too much of a jump from the magazine to the beginning of the chamber.

I would tend to agree with Butch here.

Old Grunigs were intended for a recess deeper than the Rem, and I saw long ago 2 of them rebarelled by a renowmed Bisley 'plumber' witht he recess removed, and the result was horrible..with the receiver threads visible from te loadin port..and becoming both poor performers BTW.

Maintaining the recess allow a similar extension of the barrel shank, not a bad thing IMHO.

Now comparing the Mauser to the Remington would also need to take into account the depth of the case head recess in the bolt. Mauser 98 is 2,4mm (.095), when the Remington is 3,75mm(.178) A lot of difference to consider, no?...

Now, the coned face is an other question, solving many poblems.
