Remington 223 firing pin strikes

Probably not as much an oversize hole but the monster mouth chamfer Remington likes to put on ‘em. Same fix.

If it was me, I'd be working on getting the brass sized and forget the firing pin mod. If you want to throw $$ at it, consider the mod at a later date. And the target you've posted shows you're on the right track. 8)

Huh?? What??

I use a lot of R-P and I have never seen even a tiny chamfer on any of it.

Your load is too hot for your chamber if your getting 2900fps from a 20" barrel. My service rifle loads only push 2550-2640 with reloader 15 and 8208 and 80 gr bullets. I shoot a Wylde chamber, but if I had a cle or standard 223 chamber, they would be too hot. Other issues are the powders your using , stick with rl15, varget, or 8208 for 80 grain bullets. Might also want to use a magnum or .556 primer as they have thicker cups. Either back down, or have your chamber cut to Wylde dimensions.

Thanks for the heads up, the chamber is a wylde chamber an had it purposely throated out to shoot 80 seated long. Also it is a bolt gun I'm running these loads through, for my ATC service rifle I only push my 80's to 2750 or less

Since you are seeing it from lighter loads through top end loads with no blanked primers, you have two easy options, leave it alone and shoot it or get it bushed and make it pretty.
Its a Rem. this is a perfect example for the dozens of threads, should I go custom or use a Rem. I have numerous built on both, it is what it is. Some Rems crator worse than others but almost all do it to some extent. For $100 you can make it go away.

Just my .02

I had Gretan bush one of my Remingtons (XR-100) back about 5 or 7 years ago... it was just OK... still shows a raised ring on the primer, just not as large. I was disappointed that it was not a better fit.

Now he does it differently, and re-cuts the pin so it is smaller and a different shape. The problem with that is you are now "married" to Gretan for firing pin issues, and you cannot replace a pin yourself by getting one through Brownells or other source...

Gertan is no longer an option for me.

To settle the worry that catshooter has with under sized pins being able to get if one goes bad is just have a smith turn a stock Remington pin down to the size you need. My rifle after bushing has no more problems. He does out standing work and is a great guy to boot.

The problem is Remington is making cost saving cuts in the bolt manufacturing and the primers are flowing into the bevel cut in the bolt face. My 700 bolt from 1982 is much better made and the one I bought 2 years ago looks like the one below. Remington will not fix the issue and calls this normal, and like posted above the only fix is to have it bushed. Having said that and two years later without any primer failure issues it is more of a comedic issue than anything else.

I too thought I was having primer problems till I broke out a magnifying glass and saw the bevel around the firing pin hole in the bolt face. So forget the wild a$$ guesses about headspace gremlins and just break out the magnifying glass or take a close up macro photo and enlarge the photo.

P.S. Don't blow the photo up too big it will make you think Remington used beavers to chew out the bolt face. :o
If you think this is bad then look at the rear of your bolt lugs, my lugs are not bearing evenly with the right lug with half the contact area as the left.

I fixed the problem by giving the rifle to my son to hunt with who doesn't reload and bought a Savage. ;)
