Remingto 308 throat - yuck

my son pickup up a Rem 700 in 308win with a 20" fluted bbl

the Sinclair gage for checking and determining the OAL repeatedly came up with a 2.940"bolt face to bullet point using a Sierra 155 match hpbt, that just works out to the bullet base in the case mouth about .015.

the jump would b e a monster and the bullets would not feed much less stay in the case on recoil.

great chamber for 190's or the lawyers.

Bob

Typical Remmy chamber. I was told 30 yrs ago the Remington 308's were chambered for 200gr rn Bullets. ( a lawyer thing - liability and all that.) Don't know if it's true or not but they do have long throats.

Every 700 I have ever messed with has had a throat that seamed to go threw about a 1/4 of the barrel. I called them one time to ask about it. I was told if I wanted a shorter throat I need to have a gunsmith do a custom barrel. That their rifles have to be able to handle all types of ammo with different pressures and bullet weights.

Good Thing for you those 155's love a lot of jump and will shoot lights out like that. Try it before you talk yourself out of a good shooting combo. Not everything has to be .005 off the lands. Keep us posted on how it all shakes out. Good luck to you.

Heretic!, Burn him!!

doesn't shoot worth burning powder, sending to Harts, let them scope the bbl, and if ok, true, set back a couple of threads and run a good chamber reamer in. plan is to shoot mostly the 150gr area so will throat accordingly.

will keep posted.

My 5r is like that and I've loaded them very long with great results. But yeah it's a long ride at magazine length.

Do yourself a huge favor and start off with a quality blank. If it shoots like crap now, setting back a couple threads is doubtful it will help much if any. I kinda doubt you will even find any decent smith willing to set a factory barrel back.

If you wanna set the barrel back by a couple of threads... What happens when the smiths reamer is smaller than your chamber ???

Settin back a couple of threads is not a bummer, as fried cases measure right on and the taper will clear up any minute differences, secondly, a good smith (Hart) with a scope and a background of MAKING barrels, can determine if the bbl is good. remember this is not a bench rest rifle or a 1000 yd project.

I did this same thing with a Rem 700 varmint bbl 26" 223 that was inaccurate, and now with a 222m chamber and tune by Hart shoots in the .200's - a lot of very good bbls are in the trash as many smiths are not equipped to check one out - all reason to look before you leap,

I have had dozens of custom bbls installed on every thing from 221 xp100s for sil, to 300wm for big game, with BR guns and imhsa and pd rifles.

I also have had a number of factory set back and rechambered that shoot lights out for non competition use.

Even more so than "looking at" a factory tube, I think it is the skill and attention to detail that a good 'smith exhibits, over the mass-produced factory assembly process.

As has been said so many times, a lower quality barrel installed by a top-notch 'smith will likely outshoot a top-notch barrel installed by a sub-standard assembler of parts.

Remington makes good donors. With just a little QC they could make great guns. Haven't bought a new Remington since 1973.

You've passed up a lot of good rifles then.

Remington made fine stuff pretty much up until this latest generation of "leaders" that have taken over.

As much as I love Remingtons, even I have to admit that their QC and attention to detail has gone in the can over the past few years.

No they've supplied me with a lot of good donors.

If they would have throated it for 155"s and you wanted to shoot 200's you would be bitching that the bullet was down in the case taking up all your powder space

Roadkiill, you are right , however until recently they took a middle of the "road" approach and throated for the 170-80 stuff and gave a working basis for the different weights, todays looong throat have no flexibility
