Do I expand to .311?

I am trying to make an OAL gage for a customer. I have my 30 caliber case drilled out and tapped for the Hornady rod, but the .308 bullet is real tough to put in the mouth. I have turned the outside of the case thinner so that even in a tight neck chamber, this case will still fit fine.

How do I expand the case mouth enough for a .3084 bullet to slide in and out easy enough to measure the OAL? Should I jsut take a dremel and cut slits in the neck? Can I have a .309 or .310 expander mandrel made?

Got some Steel Shim stock? say maybe some .001 or .002,,
Wrap a peice around your current 308 mandrel and push it through

Wes--- Any good grinding shop can cut them to any size you choose..
Or use a inside reamer the size you need...

This will likely not be a solution for everyone, but I start with a threaded modified case and size the neck down using an appropriate Redding sizing bushing. Then using a Wilson shell holder clamped onto the cross slide of my old Unimat lathe and a Dremel diamond-disc cutter chucked in the headstock, I center slit the case neck to about half way into the shoulder walls.

This provides enough spring retention to start a bullet into the neck and then follow through as usual using the Hornady seating depth tool. I like that the bullet is stopped in place and gripped while taking OAL measurements on the Hornady tool. I've done this to accurately gage the OAL for all my rifles ---- TAC20, 223, 223AI, 6-Dasher, 6.5x47L AI, 280AI and 308Win.

Good shooting ------ Tooter

Before I had a lathe I used a small grinding wheel on my Dremel and thinned out the neck and this worked fine.
