Remembrance of 9/11/2001

Twenty years and a week ago, my wife, son and unborn daughter spent 5 hours at WTC. When you get somewhere hard with a toddler, you stay for a while, especially when you started in midtown at the Empire State Building, but could not go up. 1993 did not seem distant then, and I droned on about that day in college in Pennsylvania, when students I was with from northern NJ and Long Island had just heard of the garage bombing at the center, some with parents there, and to be honest, unfortunately, about 2 hours worth of what an absolutely enormous target this entire complex was.

We ate, took pictures everywhere, watched the tilting platform movie, pressed souvenir pennies, went to the top, talked to the employees and watched birthday flowers being delivered up the escalator to one of them, and that’s what we first thought about on the morning of 9/11, wondering how early work started up there.

By the evening of 9/11, I knew the world was different, and always would be. I drove the several miles to DFW, where we’d always watched planes with Royse, and took pictures of what it looks like when every commercial plane in the sky is suddenly grounded, while the sun still sets as lovely as ever in north Texas, as if nothing had happened.

In all the years that have gone by, families like mine eventually travelled again, grew up and recognized at least once a year, the magnitude of the events of that day. Some think about it all the time and became more vigilant, and that is certainly, I hope, good.

Other families were directly involved daily in preventing terrorism from coming home again. Thousands of families lost relatives that day, and many more in the years after. I came to learn what it meant to have been alive 30 years before I was born, when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

I don’t have a political comment coming, related to the long war winding down. I am simply respectful in remembrance of the terribly solemn and wide-ranging losses that such a relatively small group of individuals has caused, on so many. I don’t take for granted the blessing that my family has been able to live and safely so, with all the rights and liberties we have always fought for in America.

Well put David. I was on my first day of vacation in Bowling Green Kentucky. Had a Corvette at the time and was in a hotel room across from the National Corvette Museum. CNN was reporting at first that a small plane had hit the tower (wrong) and had a live feed of the tower burning and then I can see a 767 in the back ground coming straight for the other twin tower as it crashed into it in a huge ball of flames. I worked for Boeing for many years and never in my wildest dreams would think a airliner would be used as a weapon not only in New York but DC and I believe the other was Pennsylvania. Correct me if I am wrong on that. Air space closed for over a week nation wide. Airports on High alert. Took off out of St Louis and the fighters were all lined up at the National Guard Base across from the airport and police were in the airport with K9 dogs and automatic weapons. It was Crazy to say the least. God Bless you and your family and God Bless America to all the Men and Woman of the Armed Forces.❤

Everybody remembers where they were when the attacks happened, and the emotions they felt. God bless the victims who died that day, and those who followed in the pursuit of justice. But at a terrible time our country was more united than at any other point in my lifetime; hopefully may we regain that harmony again under better circumstances.

I always make a point to re-watch the various live coverages from 9/11/2001 each year; they're available via YouTube from the major news networks at the time. It's amazing how 20 years later those same images can conjure the exact same emotions I remember feeling then.

It's still difficult to comprehend how twisted of an ideology one must have, to carefully premediate an attack with the intent of killing thousands of civilians.

I hope we havent forgotten and I doubt we have .I have been watching the tube since yesterday reliving the horror of that day.I can remember the exact square of concrete I stood on at eastman kodak when we heard about the first plane and as we were watching a tiny tv in the bosses office the second plane hit. My supervisor turned to us and said go home and stay with your families. I just want to thank every fireman , first responders, police ,soldiers and the coroners who tried to clean up and return the bodies to their familes . Yes even the docs, nurses, clean up crews etc who treated survivors to save them. I want to thank the average new yorker that stepped in to help. God Bless You All. Myself and family sends their love to all of you.I have tears welling up right now because it still hurts and I Love My Country like a child. God Bless everyone on the forum.

Sincerely, Jon Lennon

Ironic how after the attack police, fire, the first responders were considered heroes.
Now, the Demorats want to defund the heroes of 9/11 and treat them as scum of the earth.
They promote BLM and others who would shoot them sitting in their police cruisers and ambush them.
The ceremonies held today are truly proper as we remember them all, and what they did.
But what is sickening is watching these POS politicians who NOW support defunding police nationwide
sit through these ceremonies and act like they really give a crap. These no good pieces of power hungry human garbage need to go straight to freaking hell. JMHO.

Howdy !

I was a member of the 122Fighter Wing Indiana Air National Guard for 37yr. I had taken the day off to work with the surveyor, before selling the family farm for Mom's relocation.

Driving back home, I noted cars lined up @ gas stations, and wondered what had happened ?
Once home, I received a call to go in to work, as our 163rd Fighter Squadron was being tasked to stand
" Alert "; and would be flying " top cover " for midwest cities like Chicago. I got to work and looked at the tv just as the second tower was impacted.

We were to provide 24hr manning for all functions necessary to support any needed sorties. For the first time since the Wing was formed in the late 1940's , our aircraft were flying out of Ft. Wayne, IN with LIVE air-to-air missiles. And for a few days... the depth of the airliner threat was not fully understood.

I was assigned to the Hydraulic Shop, and we slept in the shop (as did other functions ) 12 on/12 off; for 3 days. Once realities of the situation became a bit more clear, we stepped back from alert status.

Thereafter, and for a variety of reasons.... personnel from our ANG unit ( like many others ) would pull rotations in places like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Qatar; and a few members even in Afghanistan. I myself deploying 2X to Saudi Arabia, 2X to Iraq; and once to Qatar.

I'm grateful that we didn't have to actually shoot down any of our own citizens, not to mention others that would also have been on airliners flying above the U.S. I thank God for that !!
