Remage Barrels with Nut

I have a trued 700 action, the 300 WSM barrel (Rock Creek boat anchor) and the nut (from McGowan). Just waiting on the stock (Leaning toward the KRG Bravo chassis).... lol... It should be as good or better than a Savage. And Savages shoot very well. Waiting till after Christmas to order the stock.

Looking to do my 700 action, looks like a interesting concept. Let me no how you like yours. Thanks Gary

I have a 28 Nosler in a McGowen stainless barrel. The barrel only has 225 rounds through it now. It is slow compared to other 28 Noslers, but that could be the throating or the barrel itself. It’s on a untrued Remington 700 (made in 1962) stuck in a Grayboe stock. It shoots lights out, 1/4 MOA to 1000 with Berger 180 VLD hunting. I will be building another Remage in the future. I only had to pay a gunsmith for Cerakote and to time the brake i wanted.

Has anyone tried the Ramage barrel and nut system?
Technically, Rem-age refers to a Savage style nutted barrel on a Remington action. I have a Savage M12 that I have changed barrels on using the Criterion or Shilen barrels from Northland Shooters Supply. I have an R700 that is set up so it can use a barrel/nut (trued action face) but right now it has a standard Krieger barrel. It is pretty easy to change the Savage style barrels if you have a barrel vice and an action wrench. I have used a standard GO gauge or just a fired case to headspace the barrels, depending on the caliber.

Sure have.....actually I prefer it verses the standard Remington shouldered barrel fit.

Built quite a few varmint/target type rifles using a 700 and a barrel nut, and there are several sources for nuts. Orienting the recoil lug to the correct position needs close attention otherwise it's straight forward.

Same level of accuracy and safety.....but significant convenience if you want to change calibers. I admit once I get a rifle shooting little tiny groups I seldom want to swap calibers on that rifle.......next!! Always looking for a cheap 700, XR100 or 40X for the next .223AI or 6BR....something like that.

I installed a Criterion 260 on a older stock 700 (ex 22-250). I've done very little load development, but every good bullet (Lapua, Hornady, Sierra. Not Bergers however) seem to shoot 1/2" with the best so far (Hornady 140 HPBT) in the 3's. I'll be trying the next one on a bluprinted 700 as soon as I decide what caliber to install.

I have two 700 actions with pac-nor barrels...one is a 22-250 and the other a 20 Practical. I bought the Pac-nut
and did have to waller out the stock just a tiny bit for the Pac-nut. Both of these rifles are very accurate and I
would do it all over again with the accuracy I'm getting. ;):)

I'm a Pac -nor fan, did not no they offered a nut? What doe's a nut and barrel run from Pac-nor?

I never have figured out how its easier to install a nutted barrel than a properly fitted shouldered barrel. Theres no way you can spin it that the nut system is faster or easier. You dont even have to own a go gage to install a shouldered barrel.
Very good point,I was just lead to believe the nut was easy to knock loose and unscrew barrel. I have not done either.

A shouldered barrel is easier on all accounts. While a nut does just knock loose and unscrews a shouldered barrel just unscrews (and goes back to the same spot blindfolded). Lots of br competitors have their barrels fitted hand tight so they can swap them without any tools

Are most shouldered barrels properly fitted? I thought they tended to need finish reaming once installed. Isn't there a shoulder roll that would need to be redone if you were to reinstall a shouldered barrel after taking it off to get the right torque while maintaining that headspace? Please don't think I am challenging you, only asking questions because I've never done a shouldered barrel.

I recently put together 6.5 CM Remage with criterion pre-fit barrel and it's a shooter. If you have the head space gauges, it's pretty darn simple with a few not so expensive tools that you can pickup from Northland.

No youre thinking of a short chambered barrel. Dont see many of those any more actually. Im talking about a finished barrel- there is no further action needed on the gun iwners part to use one except screw it on and shoot

I guess it's just the cost of having a gunsmith fit your barrel, and the shipping involved, vs the added cost of the nutted barrel and nut. (and nut wrench, and go/no gauges)

I did a PacNor barrel a couple years ago, and am real happy with the results. Cost came in a little north of 5 hunnert. (stainless premium match barrel)

It occurs to me that I could use that same barrel on another action, or sell it to someone who could stick it on their's without a gunsmith involved.

What do you fellas who fit barrels charge for the service? jd

A shouldered barrel is quicker and easier to swap out with another shouldered barrel that happens to be fitted to that action. Of course the appeal with the nut system is not how fast you can change barrels. The attractions to a prefit is price/performance, flexibility and resale value. With a shouldered barrel you're typically $600 to $700 after gunsmithing and shipping costs.
A high quality prefit barrel is in the range of $350 chambered, threaded, contoured, crowned and delivered.

Since a prefit will fit a huge number of other actions on the market without modification the resale market is excellent. Not so much for a shouldered barrel.

I would expect in general a shouldered barrel done by an expert gunsmith doing the work properly might outperform a prefit for accuracy but there are just way too many instances where prefits shoot right with the best of them.
