Rem firing pin assembly

Here I am with another dumb question. I just picked up my re-barreled rem 700 6BR yesterday and I'll be off to the range shortly with it. It has the gun lock built into the bolt shroud. I want to order a new assembly from Sinclair but I'm not sure which tool I need to complete the job. They offer a firing pin removal tool and also sell a mainspring changing tool. Thanks for your expertise.

if you are just changing the shroud you need the mainspring tool, sinclair #22-500),but most people change the entire firing pin assembly, then you need the firing pin tool, sinclair part#rfpt).

You will need both tools.. that is whats called a "J" Lock bolt shroud firing pin asysmbly. You will need also a new firing pin when you change the shroud due to the fact that the "J" lock shroud and firing pin is longer than a standard shroud and pin.

What I would do is order a complete asysmbly from either Dave Kiff http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/products/parts/remington.htm

or from

say what foggy?if he is replacing the entire firing pin assembly with a non locking one,he just needs to unscrew the assembly off the bolt body and screw in the new one, that's all i did used a pierce, but midway's works also and is cheaper.

When I have my non custom bolts bushed I always have a Gre-Tan FP assembly to screw right back in again... never a problem.

True

I want to change the entire assembly, firing pin, spring and shroud. Do I understand you correctly? The assembly just unscrews, no tools needed?

You can unscrew it out of it. You have to be careful,of your knockles) but yeah.. I usually use a table edge that is narrow enough so that the bolt handle will swing under it allowing you pry back the cocking peice so that you can rotate the asysmbly till it is able to be freely removed.

Marty ...it can be done without any special tools...buttt a Kliendorst,sp) fire control removal tool makes it a piece of cake ...and it is very handy for field stripping the bolt for periodic cleaning and when checking bullet seat depth...for safetys sake....
Yes You can hook the cocking piece on a sharp edge or with a square shank screwdriver, etc, and compress the main spring enuff to remove the fire control and of cours the reverse is the way to re-assemble the parts....Roger

Now that you mention the table edge trick I vaguely remember doing that with an old 788 or a 700 30/06 I had as a kid. I recall the skinned knuckles and my mothers marred kitchen table. Anyways thanks for the helping me. I ordered the klienhorst tool and the firing pin assembly from Brownells. As I try to educate myself here in the graduate school of accuracy I will have a ton of questions some of which I may know the answer but will look for a confirmation from someone that has been there, done that. Thanks again. Marty

You'll get a lot of use out of that tool, and no busted knuckles, and dug up table edges.
Always nice to have the correct tool at hand.........
