Rem. bolt face

Can the Remington mag. bolt face be opened up enough to handle the Dakota case safely? The head on the Dakota case is .544 of an inch.

Yes, the bolt face can be opened up without a problem, assuming you will be replacing the extractor also. On the odd chance that you have a magnum boltface a little on the large side you might get away without opening it up. For a really nice and clean bolt face I would use a standard bolt instead of a magnum, that way it will clean up without leaving any trace of the extractor groove. The Dakota cartridges are great rounds.
Good Luck

Any suggestion's on a smith that would take on such of a job? Opening up a Remington bolt face to take a Dakota round?

Sorry I can't recommend a smith because I'm in Canada, any competent smith in your area is able to do these modifications, they are straight forward.

Your best bet to make the Dakota case work would be to use a Sako style extractor or a pinned in M-16 type extractor as they will offer better reliability with such a thin nose that will be left

just my oppinion here, by the time you have a Sako extractor installed and the bolt face opened up your gonna be about $125-$150 in the hole. For $125 you can get a bolt from PTG that already has the Sako ectractor cut in it and the bolt nose and face will be correct size for the Dakota, the bolt will be better built and trued.

Pacific Tool and Gage, the bolts are complete, but the handle needs to be fit and welded on or Silver soldered. A great buy!
