Rem/Age prefit barrel?

This topic has been brought up before but can't find the answers I'm looking for. I have a Remington 700 with a 270 factory barrel I bought off a friend and have never shot it. I'm looking at possibly getting a 6.5x284 Norma prefit barrel with this remage setup. Question, is the head spacing setup up on the position of the barrel nut so no gunsmith is required? This is new territory for me so be easy! Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

In a word...yes! You can just screw the barrel into the action with your go-gauge in the barrel and bolt closed ...then tighten barrel nut. Then check with your no go-gauge. You probably should take the ejector pin out of the bolt to avoid the pressure while checking head space. At least this is what I have done with no problems. ;)

+1 Yeah, what he said!!! All my Remingtons and Savages are set up this way.

Perfect! What barrel maker is a good one folks are using? I know it won't be top quality like a smithed job but I just want something I will actually enjoy shooting/semi custom.

I have been using Pac-Nor barrels ...they make whats called a Pac-Nut to fit the Remington actions. I have been very impressed with the accuracy I get with these barrels so far. There are other barrel makers that offer the same kind of barrel nut capability and I have not heard any bad things with these kind of set-ups so far...good luck with your project. :)

I got a custom 22" 6.5x47L criterion barrel, threaded 5/8x24 for my suppressor, from Jim at Northland. It was about a 3 month wait for the custom options but it is showing great promise. Ive shot it twice now doing load development and shot 0.375" and a 0.623" groups at 200yds prone from an Atlas bipod. So far I am very happy with the whole rem/age deal.

Criterion from Jim at Northland, call don't email.

Be sure to charge your phone battery before you call. Jim loves to talk and is loaded with helpful information. He will most likely be able to put you on the right path. His prices are good and, unlike many outlets, he usually has lots of barrels in stock.

Here's a five shot, 100 yard group I shot two days ago with a .260 Criterion "Remage" barrel I got from Jim at Northland Supply. Everything else is bone-stock Remington 700 except for barrel & barrel nut. Load is 42.4 H4350, CCI BR-2, Berger 140 VLD, 2.820 OAL.
