Rem actions and heavy barrels

From my observations, the remington 700 action is commonly used as a base action for people building target rifles.

Im wondering where do people draw the line on the weight of the barrel they install on their remingtons.

I use my left hand 700 action for f class and it wears a standard palma profile krieger 30 cal barrel. To get my gun up closer to the max weight limit we have here, I can go to a heavy palma profile barrel. I felt one of these the other week and they are pretty darn heavy- and also finished at 30 inches in length. I dont think I would have any problem going up to this weight but unsure of how much more it could take.

Without having any part forward of the action bedded, what would be the heaviest barrel the remington action would take? Is it going to stress it having a 30 inch 1.25 straight profile barrel installed? Would any of the rem clones ie stiller, defiance, pierce have the same issue with such a barrel?

Would like to hear peoples honest opinions and experiences.

Due to an error in the order, I ended up with a 32" extra-heavy varmint contour (cylinder for 7", then straight taper to .900" at 32") instead of a modified 32" heavy palma. (30" heavy palma with 2 extra inches of cylinder at the breach, making 32") That gun ended up being *way* too heavy to control as a prone gun (soaked up the recoil nicely, though). However, it shot *very* well when the gun wanted to point at the target. But, when it wanted to point somewhere else, it was a struggle to get my NPA back to center.

Anyway, to answer your question, that gun shot a string of 15 or 16 Xs in a row in the middle of a 600 yard match... so the action was definitely up to the challenge of holding it up. (It was in a tube gun, though)

Sully2, why?

Well partially because I personally have to drag them around... ;D...26" is enough length to get all the velocity I need ( MAX isnt always the best and typically isnt the utmost in accuracy) I dont want some slim barrel because I need the weight....yet I dont want some bull barrel 32 inches either ( too MUCH weight)

It just gives me all that I need and not too much of anything..???
