rem 788 bolt head ???

hi have been looking at schematic to day and have seen the the bolt head can be removed, i had seen to was two part but throutgh it brazed like 700 bolt are,

i could not see if it is threaded or on a lug fitting think of making a new botl head if it comes off easy?

Are you talking about the bolt handle ???
If not then cutting all those locking lugs will be a PITA I'll bet...
The handle is brazed on the main shaft and I don't believe the main shaft is in 2 pieces..
The bolt handle is a single unit...

no it the bolt head and i can see the bolt body is in two parts but i cant find a good drawing or photo off one taken apart, e-guns list them as part too, but no photo, so i can see how to get it off?
so any help ,

it a 222rem if that of
any help
thanks for reply
ps i cant see what hold them togther ? a pine ? a thead or pressfit?

Where did you see the bolt body in 2 parts ?
Can you post a photo of the 2 parts ?
I just tore my 788 bolt down and checked the inside with my Hawkeye and darned if I can see where it is in 2 pieces. Checked the outside just as good and still don't see where it was joined, if in fact it was...
Mine is also a 222 and it is not pinned anywhere but for the ejector, and the rivet for the extractor..

ther two guide cuts on the bolt one that for the giude pin look how it cut and wher it stops at bolt nose end , i have looked down the bolt on mine with bore scope and seen nothing to show how to strip it, but i cant see how

if you look at his link you see what i mean http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=4346

was thinking of making a new bolt head for std head size with sako type extactor , but cant get the old on off :(

The 788 bolt is a permanent (except for the bolt handle when you are unlucky ;) ) three-piece assembly and not meant to be disassembled. There is nothing that would prevent cutting off the front half, boring out the rear half, machining a new bolt nose and brazing it in place. The question that you need to ask is not if I can but if I should.

As P17enfield noted, it assembles at the forward end of the bolt stop cut.

Well I ended up putting it under a microscope and can faintly see where it joined together. No real clue as to why they did it like that or the reasoning for it..
As sleepygator mentioned it could be cut off and a new one installed if you had the time and knowledge...

so i cant just change the bolt nose with lots of work cutting off the old one, id love to know how its held one theo , i cant see any pins or braze any where ?

thaks for the help

The bolt nose is brazed onto the rear bolt body and ground to size after joining. Remington did this so that they did not have to drill a deep hole and use a form drill. It was a cost measure but when you factor in the cost of machining the interface and joining the two, I am not sure they saved any money.
