Rem 770 observation

Nothing serious or ground breaking but I sight in a few dozen guns a year for folks around here ( I don't chare or anything it's just something I like doing for folks as long as they bring there own ammo ) and being in a pretty low income area 80% of them are Walmart specials, savage axis's , mossberg Patriots and rem 770's. I personally don't like the 770's. I like playing with really cheap guns and tying to fixem up but these are ...just ...no....even for me , just no ... mainly it's just due to how sloppy the bolts are .... Anyhow sighted in about 2 dozen or more in the last few years in various a caliber and I gotta say , outta all the cheap Tupperware stock, usually poorly cared for budget rifles , these seem to be the most consistent across the board.
I don't remember having one that don't keep under 2.5" @100yd with anything I fed it ...and boy I've feed them som crap. The others tend to be much much picker. Like 5-6" groups not uncommon at all.but 770's... if you can shoot ,the groups are gonna be under 2.5" which around here these guys are beyond happy with . Few old timers I zero for will say
"Heck if it can keep em on a snuff can it'll pop em in the neck JUST FIINNEE " laugh

Why ? I have no clue partly think it has to do with the stick being a lot less flimsy then most el cheapo ones ...idk
Anyhow ... Some random gibber jabber while this thing cools down some.... Ugh hope it's the last .270 I gotta deal with for a while

Years ago, I picked up one of the first plastic Rem stocks at a gunshow. I wanted to camo it up and have a weatherproof beater to use for wintertime coyote calling. It was waaayy more cheap azzed than the one you show on that rifle. I had the little v-block pressure point up on the fore-end, and from the lug to the end you could prolly bend it a half inch of deflection.

Anyway, I slapped my old trusty 222 in it, and -- HOLY CRAP!! The thing shot better than it had in years. I've got a few theories as to why, but nothing I could validate. Mainly that a poor fitting wood stock, or one that moves with the seasons, is probably worse than a cheap plastic one made to fit by Mattel. jd

I have way too many already but the Remington 783s looked to me like they could have been a cheap way to get a decent rifle. The first or second year they came out, on fathers day they had them on sale in the mid $300s. They were 308s, 270s, and 30-06s. I was looking hard at one of the 06s and the wife says "Don't you already have a 30-06?" Well "yes I have 2 or 3." the look she gave me was like and you need another????

I had a Rem 770 300wm for about a week and half. Bought at Wally world on clearance, out the door 56.99. Sold it at a gunshow to a dealer for 200. Wish Wally would have had some 783's, would have bought all they had. Did get a M700 30/06 for 106.99. Still have it.

I have nothing good to say about a 770. Literal garbage of a rifle. That said I have three or four people a year show up at the shop with one that will literally dump thousands into the rifles between a new Boyds stock, pillar and glass bedding, and a really nice Leupold scope. All to shoot MOA at best and shot once a year on a hunt. To each their own I guess.

I had one a long, long, long time ago in .243, shot a few coyotes with it ...I remember it wasn't exactly the smoothest action but I was able to adjust the trigger down to around 1.5 lbs.

I don't recall how accurate it was but it was good enough to tame the coyote population a season or two.

Iirc I ended up trading it in for a 700.

I had a guy that had a 770 (30/06) in that it wouldn't fire. There was a issue with the firing pin and spring assembly. It would have been warranty but Remington were gone. I located a new one and installed it, the gun worked. I told him to sell it quick and buy a real rifle.
