Rem 700 VLS

Just bought a Rem 700 VLS and after running David Tubbs FFS through the bore was able to attain .213 MOA @ 100 yds with 165 gr BTSP Gameking Sierra's driven by 44 grains of Varget. Optics are 20x Lyman All American Perma Center.

I had heard a lot of bad press about this rifle but out of the box it seems to do the job as long as I do mine. The standard trigger sucks though. Hope to replace it soon. It is the old trigger and not the Mark X Pro.

Can this rifle hold its own in the Varmint class BR?

I've owned a bunch of Remington 700's and 7's. Only ever had one with a bad barrel and Remington replaced it.

All of mine are great shooters but I've usually had to free float the barrel and / or bed the action / replace the stock to get down in the 1/2 moa range.

The older triggers are adjustable and I've been able to adjust mine safely down to 2.5 to 3.0 lbs which is about as low as I care to go for a hunting rifle.

I'm not crazy about their extractor design, much prefer the Winchester mauser type (claw) or Sako design but mine have work alright over the years, only ever had to replace one which failed in a 308.

I just sold mine, I used it for a hunting rifle for yrs. I got great results with the 165 SGKs. Sub .75 at 200 yards, plenty good for killing deer.

I had terrible results with 150 grain bullets (Long throat, long jump) and my groups really tightened up when I put it in a B&C stock. It didn't like the stock furniture with the pressure point on the barrel and no pillars, chassis or bedding.

I only sold mine because I'm replacing it with a 7-08 for hunting and I didn't need another 308 collecting dust.

I had a stock vld in 22-250 and after bedding it and floating the barrel it shot 1/8 moa groups with careful handloads for a while. The 250 is a burner and I smoked it. Now its a 30" barrel 45 cal smokeless muzzleloader. It has a fluted kreiger barrel and I still use the standard laminated stock that has pillars and devconed. It's amazingly accurate. After sighting it in my first 3 shot group @ 100 yards was in the .1s and I've shot sub 1" groups at 500 yds. It shoots a 300 gr parker bullet at 2815fps with a stout charge of 4198. Sorry to get sidetracked but your gun should be a lot of fun in a hunter class or stock varmint shoot. The vls is alot of gun for the cash. The stock trigger can be adjusted or you can drop in an aftermarket.

I have 2 different....1 in 22-250; 1 in 243; and a pieced together one in 260 ( same stock...same specs on barrel except caliber of course) and the answer is...YES. Dont believe what you hear...only what you see right in front of you!
