Rem 700 Varmint Special -- Twist Rate?

I have the opportunity to buy what I believe is a Rem 700 Varmint Special in 223, heavy barrel with no sights, skip line checkering, B prefix serial number, excellent condition, unknown round count but the gun has been sitting for many years, I will inspect again this weekend and get the dates codes, but the question is do you folks know the barrel twist, I'm thinking its 1 in12 but were these ever made in with 1 in 14? Anybody have any experience with these rifles and how they shoot? I don't really need another 223 but these don't come up that often and its a neat classic from another an earlier time. If I get the chance, I will try and measure the twist with a tight patch.

A bore scope is your friend at this point. If the barrel looks good, and the price is right do 52 grain bullets till its time for a new one, then get what ever twist you want.

Don’t plan on shooting any heavy bullets. That 1/12 will not work. I own one but here in Colorado a heavier bullet would be nice. You can also contact REM with your serial number and they will confirm the twist rate.
