Rem 700 Tube Gun for High-Power,7 merged posts)

I am currently building a MAK Tube Gun Kit from a short action Rem. 700 action in 6BR because I believe this will be a winner XTC in highpower due to the accuracy of the mighty 6BR round. I am using a Hart SS barrel in 12 twist because I already had it on hand. I will shoot 80 Fowlers and Hornady 75g Vmax and 87G Bthp with 30g of Varget and CCI #450 primers to start out. I know the 80g bullets are not the prefered chow at 600 yards unless there is very little wind, but I am going to give it a try because some of the Bench Rest guys have been winning at 600 yard BR with 80g Fowlers. Jeff Fowler was my neighbor and mentor when I grew up as a young kid. Jeff lived across from the ranch I lived on. Anyway, I am ready to try the 6BR out with the accuracy international magazines that it comes with in XTC highpower because I have not seen any 6BR rifles at any of the Texas HP matches I shoot. Anyone that has had any experience in this area, or who has any thoughts to add to this thread will be greatly appreciated.

Magazine feeding the 6BR can be a problem with the .308 family actions. But it can be worked on and delt with to get the job done. Magazine feed is one of the reasons David Tubbs is using the .22-250 Brass version called the 6mm-XC.

dmoran, the MAK Tube gun kit uses Accuracy International single stack magazines. I had the gunsmith test his with dummy 6BR rounds and he reported that it fed fine and ejected fine, but keep in mind that this is not feeding out of the Rem. 700 double stack BDL type of magazine. The Tube Gun Kit when finished can look like a Tubb 2K twin depending on the options a guy uses. The Tubb 2K also uses AI magazines, or at least I think it does. A guy can build three MAK Tube Gun Kit Rifles for what one of the T2K rifles cost.

I shoot a T2K in 6BR, feeds fine. Right now, the 6BR barrel is off, and a new 30" 6.5 twist Pacnor in 22BR is on it. Screaming those 90 JLK's at 3050. Accuracy has been outstanding. I'm getting it ready for a 1000 yard match in November here.

Green 3845 which do you like the best the 6BR or 22BR?? I shoot alot of .223, so I am waiting to try the 6BR in high power matches. I have shot 6BR single shot varmint rifles, and I know how accurate they are. We do not see any 6BR rifles in our Texas HP matches, and since it is a favorite caliber of mine I wanted to try it out. Anyway, glad to hear a few others are shooting the 6BR in HP. With the 6BR did you move up to high master, or were you already there?? Thanks.

Redfeather--I'm an honest service rifle shooter, much prefering my AR to anything else. Yes, I am a high master in both XC and LR with the service rifle. Now the odd part is that I am from Texas, Houston to be exact, and there are quite a few 6BR shooters here. Where in Texas do you shoot?

In my mind, there is no question that the 6BR is the better choice for XC shooting. No brass reforming, and since you are shooting only out to 600 yards, the 6BR is more than adequate.

The 22 BR experiment was to be competitive with the 6.5/284 shooters at 1000. Basically, with the 22 BR, shooting 90 JLK's I can equal the 6.5/284, but with half the powder and twice the barrel life.

My T2K feeds the 6BR from the mag very well with no problems. My Rem700 6BR does not feed well from the mag. A friend, the one who loaned me the 22BR reamer, shoots 22BR XC from a Win M70 and has no problems. I did not envision the 22 BR for anything other than a prone rifle, so the feeding issue is not something that I have, or will, explore.

Green3845--I shoot at the Austin Rifle Club, Temple, and at Waco. Thanks for the info. on both the 6BR and 22BR. I shoot service rifle alot, but I am barely into master scores with the service rifle. I enjoy this site. Thanks again.

Hi,
I have a MAK, single shoot for in 6BR, and have shoot it at a 1000 yd at Oak Ridge. If you like the AR you will love the MAK.
The only issue I have is putting on of those small bi pods on it to hold the rifle upright when it's out of the case!

This is before the Pac Nor 6br barrel and the Scott Riles Scott Riles Front sight.
You may want to check these out:

You may want to have the bolt worked over and bushed, I used Gre-Tan Rifles Talk about great turn around, They got my bolt on Wed. the 24th and called me Friday, to say it was ready to be returned!

That looks like a neat MAK Tube Gun, mine will be the repeater version. I bought a new bolt from Dave Kiff that is much better than a standard Remmy 700 factory bolt. The Kiff bolt has much tighter tolerances and it has the longer tactical bolt handle and Sako extractor. I hope to have my rifle back from Steve Satern in Iowa in a week or so. I will try to post a picture of the Dave Kiff Bolt if I can get it copied from an email and placed here. I click on and opened a bunch of stuff, and I might have the bolt picture attachment at the bottom. If I do have it I shocked myself because I do not have the best puter savvy. Thanks.

The bolt body is $125, but when you add in the Sako extractor and Tubb speedlock firing pin with CS spring and bolt handle it is $195 to $225. I am also waiting now for another two weeks until Dec 15th because his machinist is doing a run of bolt handles that are threaded on the end, so that I can screw my own bolt knob of my choice onto the bolt handle. I am going up to my brothers machine shop and machine 2 knobs out of black delrin and aluminum to see what I like the best. These also have tight firing pin holes that do not need any bushing done to them, and you can order them 5-10-15 thousands over regular Rem 700 bolt size for a tighter fit in your Rem 700 action. Thanks.

Hmmm - Kiff's oversize bolt looks like a much simpler route than bushing a sloppy fitting Rem factory bolt - and unless you're doing your own machine work, it'd probably be a cost effective way to go.

Any pictures of the face of the bolt? I called an d spoke to Myra yesterday and am interested in these.

Great looking guns!
I'm just ordering mine now, also in 6BR, for HP XCourse competition.
Have a couple questions:
28" CM barrel?
7.5" Twist for the 115VLDs?
What contours are y'all using? Regular Palma?
I'll post pix of mine when it's ready to go!
Thanks!
Cheers
Chris

I am using a 8 twist SM Shilen with a Rem. heavy barrel varmint contour this is the Shilen #17 contour. I cannot report more because I do not have my Tube Gun Back, but I hope to have it a few days before X-Mas. I will send in a picture, so that they can post it as the gun of the week. Thanks.

Hi all
I just wondered if anybody has a copy of the October issue of Precision Shooting that reviewed the MAK repeater kit, and if they'd be willing to send me a photocopy, my dime of course.
Thanks
Cheers
Chris

Todd,

We now have CNC machined cast nylon single loading blocks for the 6 BR repeaters. They'll be $32.50 each plus shipping. I'll take pictures as soon as I get a chance. Additional Accuracy International magazines are $55 each. Thanks.

Kevin

Thank you guys!
My 6BR repeater kit arrived from MAK's man, Gary Growe. New bolt, everything squared, Anschutz trigger installed and lovely and new trigger itself fitted. It's VERY long! I had ordered Tubb's bloop tube but Gary shipped it without, and he's probably right, I don't think it'll shoot too shabbily without one :-)
I lost my digital camera, long story) but another is in the mail and I"ll post when I have pics.
Gun is gorgeous. Now we'll see how well I can shoot it!
Cheers
Chris
