rem 700 sps tactical

i was wondering if any body had any experiences with this rifle? the 1 i am reffering to is the rem 700 sps tactical in .223 with the 20" barrel and hogue stock. this gun really appeals to me becuase of the length and caliber, i think it would make a good walking varmint gun for me or a youngster. any thoughts would be great thanks.

I've had the opportunity to bore scope several new production Rem. 700s. They look much better than those made in the recent past. Stock is 'tupperware', but , thats a personal choice. Some can live with 'tupperware', some can't.

well i am fine with the stock simply becuase i tend to get the wood scratched or something else. but other than that any other oppinions. i really like the short barrel but it has a 9 twist and that worries me a little i don't know alot about that
sort of stuff but i do know that will effect what bullets i shoot. i don't really want something real heavy but if that's all i have to worry about then i am ok.
thanks for the info more would be great.

I had 1 and ended up after awhile building a custom out of it. They shoot real well and i do like the compactness of it for walking around. I have a Savage precision carbine that is also a 20 inch barrel. It has the accue stock and is a little bit more money. I reload but when i first got them i shot some factory ammo out of them that i had and the savage shot much better. Look into the savage also before you make a decision. The carbine comes in 223 and 308 but they also make another model called the predator with just a tad longer barrel and it is fluted in other calibers. The H1 has the accue stock. I am not 1 of those stick to 1 only brand only and i like to try them all out. Out of the box the savage has been a winner for me.

well i have the savage model 10 predator in 22-250 but mine does not have the accu stock or fluted barrel. it shoots very good i think, but there is just something about the 700 that i really really like. but thanks for the input anyhow.

The tupperware stock is ergonomically perfect.I would buy the gun as it is just a cheaper version of the police carbine for twice the money. They saved money offering a injection molded stock with the soft touch inserts and skipped the fluting. It is a nice rifle for the money. The savage is just as nice and has a faster twist barrel in some cases. The savage can be rebarreled in your basement with 2 tools that are under a hundred bucks. The rem trigger is better but the savage is easy to change the barrel, the rem has an aftermarket option so you can rebarrel it the same way the savage nut works and is referred to as the REMAGE NUT and barrel from a couple of the major barrel manufacturers.I would go with either but the remington will be alittle cheaper.

It's a nice little rifle that should meet your needs well. The Hogue stock is a bit flimsy up front - you can squeeze the forend tip and barrel together between your index finger and thumb, but despite that they shoot well even off a bipod with a heavy scope on.

The 20" 223R Tactical version has a couple of advantages over the 26" barrel Varmint - a 1-9" barrel twist rate so you can go up to 69/70gn bullet weights without any problems, and although not perfect, the Hogue stock is much better than the hard plastic 'boomy' jobs on the basic SPS and SPS Varmint.

It has the X-Pro adjustable trigger, in theory an advantage, although I'm not sure if it really is - it still needs some work to be reasonable. Not as good as the Savage AccuTrigger IMO as it comes out of the box.

It is eminently capable of further improvement with so many bits on the market. That's what I'm going to do with mine, It'll get a basic trigger / recrowning type tune-up as stage 1, a new stock and tactical bolt-handle next, and finally rebarreled to .20 tactical. I have a local gunsmith and dealer who buys in SPS Tactical and Varmint models in .223 and .308 and sells them as semi-custom rifles with tune-ups plus a choice of Manners, Hogue or AICS stocks depending on purpose.

The only thing I don't like about is the matte black milspec type finish on the metalwork. I much prefer the semi-matte finish that Remington used to put on the PSS and VS models. It seems hard wearing enough though.

If you would like i could email you some pictures of what my sps tactical turned into. It now is a 20 inch coyote rig.

Mark at SAC built this for me. These are pictures he sent me after he test fired it. Remy action completely reworked, trigger tuned to 2 pounds, EGW base with no cant, Lilja 12 twist sendero contour at 20 inches, factory bottom metal from the sps tactical stock, HS stock skim bedded, painted flectern at GA Precision and metal work was ceracoted. I took it to the range the other week to sight it in with some factory Hornady 55gr. that i had and was shooting 10 shot groups inside a quarter off a bipod. Lookin to shrink that up as soon as i have a chance to work some handloads up for it.

i like that. that bolt handle really stands out i think, it doesn't look as if it would be hard to get ahold of at least. if i get 1
i think i will try to get a new handle for mine as well along with some other stuff perhaps.

The bolt handle appears to be bigger than what it is in the picture but it still has some size to it. I was going to go with the APA bolt but i wanted something a little larger for winter while wearing gloves while hunting. I like to cut my trigger finger out so i can feel the trigger in my gloves for winter time hunting.
