Rem 700 Mag Box Question

I recently purchased a used early 700 BDL Varmint. Among some other shortcomings it had a single shot follower glued in. I happen to have had a short spring and follower. I was missing the box and spacer which I purchased from a member here. The spacer was new in a Brownells package and marked Rem 700 spacer.

My problem is the spacer falls down into the bottom metal which allows the spring and follower to move back. There seems to be nothing to hold the spacer in place. Am I missing something else here? Is there a difference between a mag box for a standard round and a short .223 round?

I see the difference now. My box is tapered but I think it’s for a standard round as there is no notch in the back like the one pictured. I looked around online and they are out of stock or out of production. No surprise there I guess. Thanks

My 700 in 222 REM started having feed issues last year. I pulled it apart and found the spacer was no long attached to the magazine box. Ended up using a spot of JB Weld to reattach it. It now feeds as it should.

The spacer for the older .222 & .223 magazine boxes was a drop in and the later ones were spot welded on. But both require the proper box that is narrowed in the front, as noted above.

I understand how the spacer was fit and I could probably handle that alteration but I now know that the box I have is for a standard round, .308 family. I think I'd be wasting my time and box trying to make it work right. I'm looking now for a .223 family box and the rest of the parts should be good. I don't see them anywhere online so I'm posting in the Classifieds here. Thanks for the help gentlemen.

I found a member in the classifieds that is going to trade a .223 box for my .308. What a deal. Thanks for the help.
