Rem 700 long range 300WM chamber question

Hello fellow shooters,

This is my first post, I have been reading this forum for a while now and decided to create an account.

I just recently purchased a Remington 700 long range chambered in 300 Winchester magnum. The rifle shoots sub moa with 180 grain core lokt and a .539” group at 100 yard with Hornady 180 gr SST superformance both factory loads. I am developing a load now and will start trsting after I get the muzzle threaded and a 5 port beast brake installed( she got a little muzzle jump) The only issue is after firing either of the factory rounds, the bolt is slightly hard to pull back, it’s not hard to lift the bolt handle and not extremely hard to slide the bolt back but it’s not as smooth as my 1972 rem 700 30-06.

I do notice a scrape on each fired case shoulder and some scratches on the case walls, consistently on each cases.

As for pressure signs, the primers of the hornady rounds show minimal flattening, but not the core lokt loads.

Should I be concerned with this? This is my first bolt gun that I am customizing and setting up a long range precision rifle.

Thanks
Dippy

Not uncommon. Theres 2 possible culprits. Extraction timing, very likely not correct, however with new cases and reasonable loads, this may not be what your feeling. I have fixed a few of those rifles that had a burr rolled into the chamber where the belt and chamber meet. A few seconds with some emery will knock off the burr.

Alex,

Thanks for the advice.

I did insert a fire formed case into my 300WM hornady case gauge, it will go most of the way in until right before the belt. I do see a slight ring around the brass .078” from the belt.

I guess it needs to be polished.

Not so fast!
The burr wouldnt likely be .078 up the case. plus case stretch is pretty common on belted cases . measure new brass vs fired length to the shoulder. That ring might be "normal"

Polishing a chamber?

Hi Dippy and welcome, I have the very same rifle and it has always been a bit sticky. From what I have found out coming from the big boys it is extraction timing as said above. Have not done anything about it as yet. Keep me posted on what you find and the remedy .

Have you found it to be sticky with lighter loads? I haven’t tested any reloads yet.

haven't tried any real light loads, My loads are about middle of the road ,the factory's seemed to be a bit sticky as well

New brass measured 2.195, fired brass 2.21”

Yes if it has a burr the chamber may need to be polished
You may want to consult a gunsmith prior to polishing '
scuffing with Emory cloth is one thing smooth polishing is quite another.

So back to my factory Remington 700 LR fires round extraction issues. Sent the barreled action to Longrifles Inc. had them polish the chamber and time/tig weld the bolt. Also flute the bolt and install a tac knob. She runs perfect now.

Shot today prone with 210 Berger’s w/ H1000. 100 yards. She’s shoots good for a factory action and barrel.

Can’t say enough words on how pleasant it was to deal with Chad and Company at LRI, absolutely professionalism and great prices and turn around time!

Dippy what stock is that and does it have ally bedding block .

Cheers D

That’s a bell and Carlson medalist tactical stock. I machined that rear bottom bag rider out of 416 ss. I took it off cuz it gets in my way with most of my shooting. Works good for shooting prone on a bag tho.

As for the bedding, it came with a aluminum bedding block. I opened up the barrel channel .125” with the mill and milled out .100” out of the bedding block and bedded the action with devcon. Shoots good for a factory rem barrel and action. It’s getting a Bartlein and blueprinted once the factory barrel is shot out.

All in all that stock wasn’t bad at all from B&C. Not a McMillian or Manners but it’s not bad for upgrading the factory stock.

Thanks for the update !

It's no surprise 76 gr of H-1000 with 210 grainers was the node in your rifle.

All the 300 winmags I've loaded with H-1000 prefered around 76 - 76.5'ish gr with 208 / 210 heads.

For sure you got one of the better Remington barrels !

Yeah it shot Hornady sst hunting ammo well when I first set it up then really well with handloads. Besides the primary extraction issue it’s been a good rifle. 76.5 grain shot 1/2 moa group at 100.
