Does the rem 700 j-lock bolt affect accuracy? I know they are not a desirable item but will they cause accuracy issues? Lee

I think that the reaction to the J lock was to how it looked, both the exposed part of the shroud, and the way that the striker spring snakes on the shaft of the firing pin. I don't believe that there was ever any definitive proof that there was an accuracy problem with these units. If you are worried about it locking accidentally, I believe that the the striker assembly can be put together with the pin rotated 180 degrees which would disable the lock. If you are looking for a place to start to increase accuracy, I believe that this should be pretty far down the list.

I would worry about that snakey looking firing pin spring they all seem to have in them affecting accuracy more than they J-lock itself.
I remove them in all mine.. and replace them with a new shroud, while replacing the bad spring..

hello,I can say and agree with Preacher.just went throw this with a new rifel.the J key setup gave me buckshoot groups.the best group 1.5' to 2'.got a new fireing pin and installed it then shot one of the better groups again and it grouped at .300 at 100 yrds.so yes in my mind it plays with the accuracy of the rifel.

I've only tested it once on a scary accurate 30-06, and could see no difference with or without it, to 400 yards.

YMMV,

I hate the J-lock firing pins. But I recently removed the firing pins from a couple of Remington 788s.
They have a 'wormy' looking firing pin spring. The 788 firing pin is made from flat stock instead of round which is why the spring can go 'wormy'.
788s are known for having a very fast lock time and being quite accurate for a factory rifle.

I have 17stock VSS and VSSF rifles, 50% or more have the JLOCK. If there is any difference in accuracy due to that feature, I have not detected it. Larry in western Ky.

If you decide to replace it Dave Kiff at PT&G stocks them. You can buy a whole firing pin and shroud it will not have a 'snakey firing pin spring'. He offerse them in a multitude of colors also.
