Rem 700 cocking issue/ timney trigger/ UPDATE

I have a Rem700 that I installed a timney trigger on within 50 rounds of being new. This is a hunting rifle and I shoot less than 50 rounds a year thru it..probably 200 rounds total thru gun. I started having problems with the gun not cocking when lifting the bolt. Not every time but it happens a lot. Makes no difference if the action is in the stock or not. I just have to repeatedly lift the bolt until it cocks. Nothing is binding and I’ve cleaned the bolt. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.

If it matters, this is a 300WM with a heavy barrel and synthetic stock.

First piece of advice would be to get rid of the Timney ;)

But if dead set on keeping it, you will need to adjust the sear engagement screw to fix that problem. That is a textbook symptom of not enough sear engagement.

You may also need to increase pull weight. If the spring for trigger pull weight is backed out too far, it may no reset itself properly when released.

I have a 700 SPS with a Timney straight blade. Replaced the stock "X" trigger when Remington did the recall for safety reasons. When it is adjusted just right it's fine. Have you seen this and tried methodically adjusting?

Timneys are easy to adjust, what weight did it come set at ? If it's light try adjusting weight of pull and see what happens . Could also be sear engagement , that adjustment needs to be just right . Do you have experience/confidence in working on triggers ?

I've purchased a few different Timney triggers in years past and worked on many more for other people's rifles with various model actions. In ALL cases, the Timney was absolutely NO improvement over what a properly tuned factory trigger could achieve. Sometimes the Timney was even worse. Timney triggers are a complete waste of money in my opinion.

I personally prefer Bixn' Andy triggers. Next choice would be Jewell. Also hear good things about Trigger Tech but I have not personally owned a TT, only played with them a bit on other people's rifles.

Hunting Rifle ?
Timney Triggers are better than Mark X in Remington Rifles . Proper Adjustments always important.
$ 300 to $400 dollar Triggers for Hunting Rifle ,not in most Hunters Budgets?

I Shoot F/Open these days , Extreme 2 Stage Triggers in my 700’s work well .
Then there is adjusting to be done .
Did install a Calvin 2stage in a Club Rifle with work very nice Trigger for a Club Rifle .

Thanks guys for all the responses. Seems to be consensus of sear engagement and pull weight...along with the opinion they suck! Lol:D:p

One thing I failed to mention was when this first came up, shortly after I bought the trigger, I contacted Timney and requested a replacement. They would not do so and gave me some suggestions on how to remedy the problem. I bluntly told them I was not a gunsmith and expected a new trigger to work properly and was concerned about possible safety issues if I did something wrong. We went round and round they would not replace. I’m pretty handy with farm work, carburetors, light electrical etc but I don’t know a damn thing about a trigger except that if it doesn’t work right someone can end up dead. I’ve been provided some good info here and through PMs so I’ll tinker with it. If I feel the least bit uncomfortable I’m going to go another route. There is another thread on here about Trigger Tech triggers...I’ll research them some.

Again, thanks to all for your help!

I'm not going to tell you to get rid of your Timney. I will share my recent experience with Timney on a trigger in my CZ455.

I think if you return the trigger to them (after getting the authorization), they will correct any issues you have.

Sounds about right for my experiences with Timney trigger performance...no good.

Glad they got it fixed to your liking after making you jump thru all the hoops.

CZ factory triggers aren't great, but not that bad either. Granted there aren't many aftermarket trigger choices for CZ rifles, but you could have spent $10 on a spring kit for your 455 then installed them in the factory trigger and probably had a lot better performance than the Timney.

The only Timney that I like is the Tactical. I've have one in my Rem. 600 varmint rifle, and it works flawlessly. Only drawback is there's no provision for a safety. It's not an issue with me.

UPDATE- With instructions given by members I adjusted the sear and did quite a few dry fires and it cocked every time. There was a small nut on the sear adjustment to lock it in place. It had a green glob of something to keep it tight. Should I put some loctite on it now that I’ve broken it loose?

Thanks to everyone for your help!!

If there are still problems you might consider another call to Timney.

I had this same problem a few years ago and had a completely different customer service experience. Possibly due to research before calling. After explaining the problem and listening to the advice about adjustments, I asked about the different length sears that are available to solve basically a known issue.

They sent a couple sears and a hat gratis.

It also could have been a different model trigger.

Excellent news, glad you got it figured out . I would not use loctite, after shooting it some you may want to make more adjustments .

rwj- thanks for the info. The last description is for a green loctite and it says for use with set screws. Wonder if that’s what was on my gun?
