Rem 700 action compatibility?

I'm looking at starting a project gun (I won't be doing the machine work) and I'd like to start with a 700 action and go from there.

Hearing that the actions only are sometimes hard to come by I figured I would end up getting an older rifle and going from there.

My question is, is there a resource that I reference to see what actions will work with what cartridges? For example if I find a cheap .243, what's possible with that action and bolt.

Thanks in advance for any help.

there are different length actions and different size bolt faces---what do you want to chamber up? a ".243" is a Short Action(although you can build one on a long action) it has a 0.473" (I think) or a ".308" bolt face. It can also depend upon which bullet you are shooting which indirectly depends upon barrel twist---I know of no reference but any gun smith should be able to tell you what you need. (I think you should pick a caliber or two and post them) this list does not include them all but: SA .473 will work for: 22-.250,.257, .250 savage, .260 rem, 7mm-08,.308,etc and many, many other standard and wildcats -- ANOTHER option would be to save up for a "perfect" rem clone action(I would)

Thanks Okie,

I've got an option to buy a .243 pretty cheap and was hoping to get it rebarelled and action worked to a 22br. Another possibility I have is an XR-100 that's in .204 now but I don't know if I would have many options with that, though I'm leaning towards it since it's a stock and action in one package and being that most handloads and magazines don't get along, the single shot action is an attractive option.

check with the gunsmith on this. Your .204 is a ".223" or a smaller boltface which will not work with a .22 br as is, however the smaller boltface can be opened up to accomodate the .22 br case (and I think you'll need a sako style extractor installed) this becomes expensive so visit with a gunsmith ANOTHER option is to have dave Kiff @ pacific tool and gauge make you a bolt for your XP-100---or watch the forums for one for sale(I think there was one on yesterday) I am pretty sure the ".243" action you can get will work as is for a .22 br hope this helps-----you could build a .223 rem on the XP-100 and have a rifle you can find a lot of ammo for at prices way lower than most other caliber
