Rem 700 7 mag convert to .308

I have an older Remington 700 in 7mm Mag. How much trouble is it to change it over to .308 Win. I know a new barrel chambered in .308, but what about the bolt face? I know the Magnum case has a larger head diameter. Does the whole bolt have to be changed or just the extractor end? Will the long action be a problem if I feed one at a time. I would like to convert this rifle to shoot F/TR events.

The long action is no problem in single loading; don't give it a second thought. As to the bolt, however, you need to either change the bolt or have a bushing made to bring it down to 0.475" or so. Then you'll have to work out an extractor, most likely a Sako type, although a Remington could be fitted for maximum safety. You might as well forget the ejector, just plug the hole. While all this is being done, consider having the firing pin hole bushed and the pin reduced to 0.062", it won't mean much on the .308 but one day you may decide to try a small primer case like the 6.5x47 or 6BR or even the small primer .308 cases and it will be a good thing to have it bushed already. Purchase a PT&G bolt have it fit & have the handle TIG welded on the bolt body.

Easiest approach would be to trade bolts or complete actions. A lot of people want to go from '06 to mag and would welcome a trade.
