rem 700 sa cal. fit

I am new to this - looking at building a long range rifle for competition 600-1000, Am on a budget. Will a 6.5-284 cal fit a rem 700 sa currently in 308. Looked at the cartridge list and case size looks close.

yes,but only single shot!magazine to short for vld bullets.i'm building one now.

I have a 40-XC action that is chambered in 6.5-284. Works fine with single shot adapter as a prone gun.
The word "budget", and this caliber dont usually go together! Order two barrels and re-order another when you put the second one on.

Thnak you for the repsonses - it sound as if this would not be considered a budget type shooter.
To go with that any suggestions on cal/barrel/ etc.

If you push 140's to 3000 fps, the barrels only last from 800-1200 rounds before the throat is trashed. With barrels 18 weeks out from most if not all the makers right now, it is best to have the replacement in hand.
Another round that is doing good at the distaces you are looking at is the 6 Dasher. Dont know how the barrel life is on those. Maybe someone that shoots one will chime in.
What type of competition are you considering?

I am looking at shooting benchrest 600/100 and F class

Try a 6mm variant (BR, 6XC) for 'standardized' cartridges w/ 105 - 108gr. bullets. If you really love the 6.5 try a 260 Rem. or 6.5x47 Lapua or 6.5 Creedmoor w 130 - 142 gr.s.
