rem. 700 .308 question

can anyone tell me if you can seat 175gr. MK bullets into the lands w/ a s/a remington 700?

The lands on my 5R are 2.294". I seat 155 Lapua's scenar to 2.281" ogive,

I was in the lands at 2.91 COAL on my 700P with a 168 SMK. You should be able to get there with a 175. Your gonna have to single feed if your running a SA

basicly what i'm wanting to do is build like a m-24/m40 clone...combine the best of both together....i don't want the long action but if i did i would step it up to a 338 lapua....hopefully i can still get .5 moa or better w/ a little jump... i definatley want to keep magazine function.

what are some barrel and twist options??? really leaning towards 5r 1-11.25".

I think you're leaning just right.

I built a 308 with a Rock 11.25" MTU contour.

You'll be really hard pressed to top that barrel from anyone.

FWIW: I had a 700 HB 26" 1-12" that would shoot 190 SMK's just fine.

wow, that's a nice rifle alf! this is kinda what i have in mind more or less....

1.remington 700 sa. with the bolt/reciever trued and lugs lapped.
2.24" fluted kreiger cut rifled barrel w/ 5r rifling and 1-11.25" twist.
3.H-S precision stock
4.leupold MK 4 scope w/ either leupold or badger rings & base.

i think cost wise i'm looking at about $2500 unless i can find a cheaper scope for the same quality of leupold.


what's the max C.O.L. that will fit in the short action magazine box?

I wouldn't be afraid to try a good jump. I'm shooting an H-S Precision HTR factory rifle, 24" 1 in 12 heavy fluted, cut rifling and Leopold Mark 4 5.5 X 20. Using 168g SMKs and Varget at 2710 fps. It has a 10 round mag, so if I want to get close to the lands, I have to single shot it. But keeping the rounds at book OAL (to fit the mag), it has about a .100" jump.
And shoots in the mid .2 moa all day long. And the best part is, it does this on the first round, with a clean cold barrel.
So try a jump, it might not make any difference.

Shot from my 24' 1 in 12 Cut rifling, using 168g SMKs this is what I get.

44.0g Varget = 2670fps
44.5g Varget = 2710 to 2731 these are averages of a dozen or so different batches I tested. All primers are Fed GM 210, in Lapua brass.
Another good powder for 168g 308s is 4064, you get vary low ES & SDs and use a little less powder, but its a larger grain powder and doesn't run through my powder measure as well, its a bit like gravel. But shoots good.

When I first got this rifle, a Mfg Note inside said it was built to shoot, and was tested with 168g Federal GM Match, The Factory test target was a .243 for 3 @ 100yds. So I tried it, and it shot vary well.
So I decided to dissect a round and see if I could find what it was made from and duplicate it.
The bullet was a 168g SMK, and the powder weighed 44.5g, so I compared the looks of the powder and size of its grain with all that I had on hand, and it was a dead ringer for Varget, so I checked the book to see if that was an ok load, and it was. So I made up some and shot both the Federal GMM and my 168 SMK with 44.5g of Varget, over my Crony, and the speeds were the same 2710 FPS. I haven't bought any ammo for it since. And it still shoots raged one holders, if I do my thing.

I also agree the 11.25" twist is just right for the 175g smk. My GAP utilizes a Bartlein 22.5" barrel with the 5 grove canted lands. It's a tack driver. my lands were cut so I can just load to mag length and it'll jump perfectly. You can have your smith ream your chamber to what ever you want, so if you want it at mag length, bring him in say a 308 Black hills 175g SMK round and have him meet the specs. It's what they do and they do it well.

I was using 44.0g Varget with great results also with the 175 smk

If you want I can measure OAL into the lands.

Edit: my length is exactly 2.800" so my bullets on factory rounds are in the lands. I've never had a bullet pull out on either my hand loads or factory loads. I have .002" neck tension on my hand loads.

as long as your chamber hasn't been cut for a heavier bullet I would think they would.in my 5R the chamber is around 2.900 something.so chambering long isn't a problem.but I do agree on what one said about a barrel needing a 1:11.25 twist with a 175g or 168g bullet.but even for a 5R you do not need to seat them in the lands or just a little jump.all I do is seat the a 2.800.so its not a problem for me.the smk is a fogiveing bullet.and not like a vld bullet.

no that's okay, since it varies from gun to gun and bullets. i appreciate you asing tho. i'm still running some ballsitics and trying to figure out what i'm gonna do....i may have to put this build on the back burner for a while anyways.
