Rem 597 / 17hmr failure

I took my son and his friend to the sportsmens club to do some shooting. We took a Rem 597 /17hmr. He fired a full clip without any trouble, but when his friend took over and loaded the clip and when he took the first shot the rifle malfunctioned. He was holding the clip and suddenly the brass base exploded shooting the clip down shattering the plastic base of the magazine. Left him holding his hand with powder burns on his palm. Said it felt like a firecracker. I gathered the parts and found the spent brass. Just opposite the indent of the firing pin the base was blown out. I called Remington and they said that they needed to get that rifle back ASAP. They gave me two options. 1. They would issue a voucher for $200 so we could buy another rifle of our choice or 2. They would trade even for a Rem 597 22 WMR. I'm sending it back for the 22WMR. Anyone else experience this?

I think the 597 in 17 were recalled one or two years ago due to the exact problem you described. There so much heck raised over the $200.00 voucher bull they started offering the 22 mag replacement.

Were you shooting old ammo? The new stuff has a warning to NOT use in any semi-auto. IIRC, the recall for all of the 597s was actually three years ago. The 17HM2 semi-auto conversions are known for the same problem.

Yep, they recalled the 17 a while ago. I don't know why the 17 has so many problems with the WMR doesn't but I know for those who still own a 17 you really REALLY have to keep the chamber clean to keep them from firing OOB (out of battery) which is what happened to yours.

my WMR revolver I can shoot forever without a problem. The HMR that I had, I had to clean the cylinder after about every 2 loadings as they were hard as hell to eject after that.

Today I called for return authorization and..... the story has changed. I originally was told that they would swap out my rifle for a new 597 in 22 wmr. Now I'm told that they will rebarrel my rifle with a new 22wmr instead. Anyway it is on its way to get rebarreled.
