Rem 504 question

I picked up a Rem 504 the standard version, i put a luepol 3.5-10 on it and find it shoot great, sometimes.

I checked the free float and cleaned it up, cleared the trigger that was contacting the stock, micro beded the front and rear contact points of the action and things got better,

the thing still seems to mover around, some 50yd groups <.500 and then some wander - to new impact points and open up to 3/4-1"

do any of you who have had one experience stock flex with cheek/hand pressure?

Any suggestions

Bob

any experience with the Anschutz 1416 d,

I use the 22lr for Pd short range up to 100 yd, had great results with Rem 541t, and CCI mini mag, which i treaded for the 504 to have a shorter "car" gun, sad results.

A good friend tried everything to make a Remington 504 shoot. It would not and he eventually managed to return it. He got a Weatherby which really is an Anschutz with a 64 action and sporter barrel. It shoots very well, but still not as good as my heavy barrel Savage Mark II BTVS.

The Anschutz guns with a model 54 action and heavy target barrels, are probably among the very best you can get. Pricey though. A Remington 40X is a top contender too.

With Lapua top notch ammo (Midas M) I can get between 0.250"-0.300" 5 shots at 50 yards with my Savage.

I'm with ya bheadboy, I have both the sporter and the heavy barrel 504. I really like the slick/beefy actions, side bolt release, really good triggers, and the stocks on both. My HB shoots Wolf MT in the .4's and the sporter shoots them in the .5's. They're no Annies or coopers, but they're not $1200 guns either. Someday they will wear custom barrels but for now I really like them for what they are.

Thanks DC, folks i use the rifle to shoot pd at ranges up to 100+/- yds, the CCI MINI mag does a great job of clean kill, so my accurcy test are with the MINI MAG which i have found to be the most accurate of the hp 22's along with the twin Federal load.

surely not the target ammo some of you are using, so i have asked Dan Lilja what he expects from the ammo i use - i will post his reply here, i will let you know if i make the switch i will post the results here of the accurcy i gain for you to see.

Thick action walls don't translate to rigidity if (as the case with 504) the barrel is clamped into the receiver with a draw screw through a slit.

The fact that remmie chose to affix the bolt handle to bolt body with a tiny set screw shows clearly that the 504 is all hat and no cattle.

Kudos to Dan Lilja for his honesty. His superior bbl can't offer an accuracy improvement given the 504's poor bbl mounting scheme.

I guess each gun may be different, but the CCI MiniMags were about the poorest of all ammo I tested in my Savage. Of the more reasonably priced stuff, Remington Cyclones were much better -- about half the group size.

And if shooting at distance the target ammo tends to be much more accurate due to less wind drift at their subsonic speeds. See this interesting article.

95% of rimfires on the market are pinned, not threaded. Remington put Shilen barrels on the HB model late in it's production in an attempt to overcome the problems with in-house barrels, and I can assure you the design ain't no turd.....mine shoots very small, and ergonomic wise feels much like a centerfire. It's even tight chambered for Lapua ammo.

Most pinned bbls are a press fit = greater rigidity than 504's system.
Dan Lilja knows his stuff. I don't need to say more here.

I have tried a number of hp clad 22 ammo and the cci minimag is by far the most accurate in my gun, my sons, and two friends 541's and 504's all shooting .5.

if Lilja indicates his bbl will not do better, then lilja fit or rem fit, the rem bbl is doing the job as well as his. Nomo4me try some mini mag in your 22 and see what it will do, maybe you will be surprised it is a .5er also.

With the best action and barrel combinations chances are you won't get good groups if you shoot turds through them.

If I remember correctly both Lilja 504 barrels and Cooper claim .250" groups with GOOD MATCH AMMO!!!! Lilja even said to expect groups in the .1's in 17hmr. Big claims for a turdy action.

Call Cooper and ask what groups to expect out of their $1600 .22's shooting mini-mags.
