Rem 40 X 2nd session

I had a beautiful morning to play with the tuner again today. Overcast, windless, and no one else on the line between 7am and 9am. I decided to play with some mid priced ammo that my CZ 452's love in testing the tuner. SK Pistol Match Special. Looks like the 40X approves of it also

Started the tuner at 5-00 and worked my way down to 0-00 before starting to play with the J Pappas slider. On gut instinct I picked the 4-00 over the 1-00 to play with the slider. I knew the flyer to the left in 4-00 was all me and actually fired a 4th round which ended up in the same hole as shot's 1 and 2 . T-1 to T-3 was me moving the slider over the three sets of holes in the tube. The middle hole seemed slightly better. I then began fine adjusting the tuner moving it in increments of 5. To my eye it looks like 3- 90 to 4- 10 will work with the sweet spot around 3- 95 to 4- 00 with the slider over the middle holes.

Anyway it was a great morning to be shooting and I am more than pleased with my Remington. Edited to include a pic of the windless conditions also. That is a rare thing so far this spring an deserved to be documented

Good call on getting out with a low wind condition AND using flags. Looks like you got some great information on your settings with the SK. Good job and thanks for sharing. WD

I was wondering why you didn't explore the zero setting from you first testing? looking at the how it shot.
I would try just the turner without the bloop tube. turn the turner all the in as far as it can go and move out by 5 clicks. IMO there is too much weight going by the zero setting.

looking at this morning I think you may well be right. 0 - 0 gave some good results my first session with the rifle. It fell apart at 0 - 25.

This was shot with the slider all the way to the rear over the largest holes using Eley Match and Midas+. l like the theory behind the slider, even though they do seem to have fallen out of favor. I guess when this rifle was built back in the 'teens they were all the rage. I think I will try 0-0 with the slider removed and then on the second or third holes just to see. I now have no idea what caused the flyer on 7, I should have written it down

Try it without the bloop/slider just the tuner by itself and start with it turned in all the way this would even be past the zero mark. I am assuming your POA was center of the target. do not make any adjustments to the scope just let it group where the settings put the shots.

tried several settings this morning before the wind kicked in. 0-00 with and without slider, - 3 with and without slider, + 3 with and without tube. 0- 0 with the tube and with the slider all the out proved to be the best. Wind was blowing a constant 3 - 5 with gusts up to 7 by that time so I decide to shoot as few USBR targets for practice. That was humbling, my best score was a 237 1X with the tuner at 0 and the slider all the way out using SK long range.

Maybe it was just me getting more used to the allowing for wind but it seemed that with the tube on the bullet bucked the wind better and I had fewer flyers out outside the 9 ring. Next week I want to do several more USBR and ARA practice targets but I have pretty much settled on 0-0 with tube and slider to the end.

Enough tuner tweaking, now I just need to get in some serious practice

I was hoping to see a target shot from the -0 to at least 25+ with just the tuner.

I went from - 3 to +6 in increments of 3 with just the tuner, it really was not worth pursuing farther. Looking back at my older targets my best was shot at 3-95 to 4 -10 with the slide in the middle position.

For whatever reason using the slide seemed to really help in the wind. The bullet did not seem to move as much with the slide on. No idea why that is but the slide is staying on from here on out. I picked up 10 points by putting it back on. These USBR and ARA unlimited targets are not as forgiving of wind related errors as the ARA factory targets are

Its amazing how much easier a rifle in tune is to shoot in conditions.

I have been doing a lot of research on that Pappas tube/ slider and finding some threads discussing it's use from 2009 to around 2015. Several comments were that it seemed to help the bullet buck the wind. That kind of makes sense in the theory that it allows the bullet to stabilize for a bit when it leaves the barrel. After Pappas' death they seemed to fall out of favor but for a couple of years rifle's equipped with them seemed to win quite a few matches. Some of you with a bit more rimfire experience and with access to a machine shop might want to make one to experiment with.

The wind was steadily increasing yesterday as it warmed up and the target I posted was shot last and while the ammo was also changed on that one it did have the highest score. Coincidence and ammo change, maybe. I screwed up and changed two things at once.

Sunday I am planning on switching to the Eley match and doing a couple of practice targets. Wind is predicted to be 4 - 8 mph from around 7- 9 o'clock so it should be good practice session. Lord knows I need the practice lol

They’ve been out a long time and there will be lots of internet commentary but, remember it’s the internet.
James was a good friend and we talked about these a fair amount When he introduced them.
Wind bucking was not really part of the equation. Most of it boiled down to two elements, one, buffering the slug for a bit after exit with venting and more likely, some extra tuning weight after the muzzle.
Some love them, some do not, they remain a topic of discussion, nobody has ever put forth a definitive explanation of why however, Some guys go with these, mid barrel deals, etc……the detractors feel it has less to do with tuning and more with “ overwhelming” the inherent vibrations, not unlike examples years back with lead weights, lots of them, on the end of Harrells. In the end, you pays your money and take your chances.

One thing James said early on, however, set you tuner first to your best tune and then play with the slide or your in for plenty of false positives. Never been a noodle guy myself soYMMV.
