Rem 3200 hammer spring compression

I use a Rem 3200 for Trap. The lower barrel hammer spring strut supporting the hammer spring fatiqued at the bottom of the threads that screw into the block that rides on the base of the hammer.

Pain in the butt to get the broken threaded section out of the block but I managed.

I made a new strut but now must fully compress the hammer spring to install the spring/rod/block assembly into the frame. That spring is one strong dude. How do I compress the spring to do the installation?

You might try getting on http://www.trapshooters.com/ and go to the links and then to Firearms parts and service. Look through them and you may be able to find someone there with the knowledge or tools.
A long time ago I had a 3200 and it seems that the hammers used coil springs. I changed to a TM 1 35 years ago and was able to compress the hammer springs on it using needle nose pliers after I got it on the spring guide.

Look in the Brownell catalog, part #080-000-114AD, Shotgun Mainspring Tool and see if that will help.

KMart.......thanks for your interest.

I phoned Laib`s Gunsmithing today. They are Rem 3200 specialists. 320-796-2686 for anyone with a 3200 problem. Great folks there. They led me through the steps to insert the new hammer spring assembly into the frame.

Insert new strut into hammer clevis (what I called a block in my first posting), place hammer spring coil over strut, place in a vice so that one vice jaw bears on the top of the clevis and the other jaw catches the bottom edge of the coil spring. Carefully tighten the vice making sure the assembly doesn`t go exploding into the air. The rear end of the strut will advance out of the spring and over the vice jaw and reveal a small hole about 1/4 inch from the end of the strut. Insert a 1/16 pin into the hole and release the vice. The pin holds the spring fully compressed. Place assembly into frame and pull out the pin. And there you go.

Laib's Gunsmithing are good people. I had them rebush the fireing pin in my TM 1 about 10 years ago. When it comes to that kind of repair they are the Gretan of the shotgun world.
Glad you got it back together

Funny, I just took one of 3200s apart and I am sending it to Laib for the firing pin hole mod. I found this set of instructions very useful.
