rem 30-06 donor rifle

I just bought rem 30-06 . Looking through the list of calibers on this site I've found that most of them use a short action for both short range and long range distances. What would be a good 600-1000yd caliber for this 30-06 long action that would give the barrel long life and be accurate? Also I assume that even a long action would work with these short action calibers. You would just have a longer throw on the bolt. Let me know if I am wrong.
Thanks in Advance
Mike

Mike the calibers you need to consider are in the 6 MM BR family, Dasher and is some of it related kin folks, and then the 6.5-284. Any or all should be on a 700 SA for optimum accuracy. Your LA will work, but definitily would be least desireable at resale time. Larry in western Ky

Mike, I have a LA 700 I built with a 260 Rem using a 24" Douglas XX. The. LA helps with those long Sierra 142 MK's. The short actions are stiffer but the Long Actions provide more surface area for bedding the action to support that big long heavy barrel you'll be adding one day. Lapua now makes 260 brass & that's another huge plus.

BTW don't get real anxious to rebarrel that 30-06. Lapua makes brass for that too and the Sierra 175 MK will do it's part if you do yours. Add some weight to the stock and a quality recoil pad & go have some fun.

Re: rem 700 30-06 donor rifle

Will, I bought this rifle new, specifically to true the action and rebarrel. It hasn't even been out of the box. I really do not have confidence that the factory barrel will shoot accurately. I will slug the barrel to see if it has any loose and tight spots. I really don't want to waste much time trying to see if it is an accurate shooter and doing load development on it. I should have done more research on the caliber, but I was on vacation and got a really good deal. It was an impulse buy. I might put it up for sale and purchase a rem 700 SA then chamber and rebarrel it in a 6.5 x 47.

Yeah I know what you mean I'm looking into buying a 25-06 now that is on a clearance rack new for less than I can order it from the distributor. Most 25-06's do shoot well out of the box so i'll shoot it awhile & work on my wind reading. Later I'll rebarrel it to a 7X57HK or 280HK so I need the long action. My 260 is on a 700 LA. 6BR on a Rem 788.

BTW how much do you want for it?

I made a target .30-06 out of a long action with a Krieger barrel, target reamer. Shoots sub 1/2" groups. Very easy to load to much higher velocities than the .308. It will take a Master Class shooter to tell the difference in accuracy between a good .30-06 and a .308. Neither will be as accurate as the 6BR class.

I am in the same boat you are in as i have a stock and a comeplete older 700 in 30-06 that i am going to part out and use the action and trigger for a build. We have alot of matches at our club but i have always been into varmint hunting and shooting at the benchrest range which goes to 200 yards. I truely do not have much experiance with the larger calibers as i have had no need for them. But i am getting a little older and wanting to spice life up a little and do some matches and hang out more with the people i know their. I am leaning to the 284. Heard alot of good things about it and right now i just want to get wet behind the ears and have some fun. If i like it well enough and want to try something else i will build another or rebarrel this 1. I also thought about building a 220 swift as that is just about the only varmint caliber i have not tinkered with but always wanted to. Maybe a 220AI in a 8 twist. Good luck with your project, build something and get out their and have fun.

Just happen to think of a use for your long action. Many of the short cartridges have a very long overall length when loaded with long, heavy bullets. If you want to use them from the magazine in a hunting rifle you will need 3+" overall in the magazine to function.
