reloading the 257 Roberts

carl1575

I am still in the car business after 53 years
In the last 6 months I found a 250 savage two 257s a 2506 in the back of my gun safe plus a 260 rem and a 6,5 284. I really dint know how they got there but now that I found them I had better start shooting them. They are a hell of a lot more fun than those 300 sonsofbitches I have been shooting the last fifty years, some where I remember something about 257 Roberts plus p loads and brass dose any one out there know what I am talking about, thanks for looking Carl

i loooove my 257 roberts +p, i am shooting the 80 grain barnes ttsx at 3285 fps with an es of.......... 1 fps. I have not sorted brass, or turned necks, just a load that i tried from my ruger m77 sporter classic. Shoots at or below .3 from a shaky bench at 100 yards. I am using h4895 but i dont recall charge, depth off the lands is something like .117 i believe. I have it written down but not infront of me.

Carl,
I too am a 257 roberts fan. I have another one on layaway at a gunshop as we speak. If I remember correctly, pretty much all the winchester brass I have bought to reload was marked +p on the case. I typically have just stayed with reloading manuals per say on loading. a pet load in the one I already have is the 117spt or 117sbt sierra bullets, H4831 powder. I think the powder charge was in the 46.0 range??? don't hold me to it, just can't remember for sure. It's kind of a slow powder, but I tried it years ago and it worked. It also shot well in a buddies 257rob. I think the speed was in the 2600fps range, again, I would have to check my notes on it. I never really pushed it harder than that. It shot too well to bother changing anything. I am debating trying H380 on the new rifle, only because a local shop has it in stock....and it's something else to try. I also seem to remember that the latest sierra manual shows the 257 roberts page as +p loads on that cartridge.

The Speer Manual, 13th edition contains a explanation of the 257 Roberts + P. Winchester's +P factory loads contain cases with thicker walls to accomodate the higher pressure loadings design for modern bolt action rifles.

New brass manufacturered today is designed for modern bolt rifles and load data. IMR 4064 is good powder to start with for reloading.

This is one of the all time great cartridges and it's a shame that it isn't chambered in more rifles today. My uncle had one and it was a top performer on white tail plus very pleasant to shoot.

Went and grab ed my speer # 14 and on page 278 there is Roberts +p every thing I need to know. my memory isn't what it used to be I was trying to buy a burris compact 4x scope for my 25 savage light weight hunter to night on this site when I remembered a box of scopes I had in my shop. I go and find the box, open it up and there is the same scope I was trying to buy along with 5 others one new in the box weaver compact 1to3 power that's the one I think I will use, then I will have a nother reloading project Carl f

Like K22 I've also had excellent results w/ IMR-4064. Using standard .257 rbts. brass (prepped) & Berger 87 gr #25407. Started @ 40.8 grs & worked up.
