Reloading Mentor for Newbie?

Thanks Greg. Regarding rifles, I will over time have at least four acquired most likely in this order. These are:

AR15,223 Remington).
Bolt rifle,6mmBR)
AR15,6mmAR)
AR-10,308)
???

The ARs were chosen because they are endangered in California, and I wanted a few before that are all banned.

I looked at the Savage because it was available in 6mmBR, in two twists, is a single shot with a robust receiver, and is known to shoot very well. I can also get a Remington 5R Milspec in .223. Or, buy the pieces and have it built. But, this may be getting into serious $$$. I don’t know.

Looking over my posts, I neglected to mention I will be shooting off benchrest bags sometimes, and a bipod at others. The latter may change what level of quality is needed for ammo vs a quality benchrest arrangement. ??? Nonetheless, I would be willing to buy a semi-custom gun that suits my shooting requiremnts, some bench, some bipod). Is there such a thing? I do expect at some point, to probably want to have a full-on bench rest rifle.

In terms of desire for “near bench rest accuracy”, I want as much accuracy as each can deliver, after “limited” accurizing. For instance, the AR15 in 223 is being built with a heavy walled upper receiver, that often better aligns the barrel with the bolt than other receivers. But, I do not have access to having the receiver barrel face trued to the bolt for absolute exactness. I ordered a Krieger barrel, .920” muzzle, 22” long, 1:9” twist, again to maximize accuracy with the light bullets I anticipate using at 100 and 200 yards, but did not have a custom chamber cut, in part, because I am not sure what to ask for. I opt for parts that generally deliver the best accuracy, trigger, etc.).

For the bolt rifle, it would appear from your comments that a custom bolt rifle may be needed to take advantage of very carefully prepared ammo. And that is the rub. At what level does ammo need to be prepared to extract all the accuracy potential out of a particular rifle? I get the sense that going to great lengths to prepare very high quality ammo may produce no measurable benefit out of a mostly stock rifle. Just like having a very high quality gun may not show its stuff with mediocre ammo.

I intended to buy Lapua brass and use the components suggested in the cartridge section of www.6mmbr.com. Those recommendations are largely what you are suggesting here, and am pleased with that.

I tend to subscribe to the philosophy of “buy once or buy twice, and spend more money). Do you have other recommendations for a press? Why balance AND electronic scale? Understood on staying with the more basic stuff for now and supplement as needed later. Should save some $$$ initially. $1,500 is a bit higher than expected,$1,200), but is OK.

Thank you.

Good morning Phil,
Now that we know what rifles you have or are going to acquire we can help you a bit more. For our AR platform type rifles you’ll most likely need to full length size your case each time you fire. You can if you wish still use bushing type dies but you probable won’t see the accuracy. Still turn the necks during case prep. Also you may wish to invest in a neck annealing machine. That’s my next big investment. Right now I use a Lazy Susan.

Why both a balance beam and electronic scale? Electronic scales are weird and some times as little as 5 times that you weigh a powder charge the scale is out 1 or 2 tenths of a grain. The electronic scale is faster and you’ll love that but until you learn the qurks of your electronic scale you’ll need to double check it’s ZERO at least every 20 or 25 loads.

As for the bolt action rifle if you really want the Savage by all means get it. But when you can get it rebarreled have one of the sponsored gunsmiths here at 6mmbr.com do the work. Gunsmithing is an art form. No one gunsmith can be the best in every area of gunsmithing. If you spend most every day accurizing colt revolvers or AR15’s how great are you going to be working on Savage bolt action rifles? Competent YES, but being able to squeeze out the last 10% of accuracy… No.

Remember, high quality components and case prep are 90% of the reloading game. Also for your AR type platform rifles you might want to look into a large progressive type press. It just depends on how much you will be shooting a month. I would say more than 250 rounds per rifle you might want a progressive press.

Greg,

If you are not careful, I will be a never ending source of questions. I don’t know for instance, why I most likely need a full length sizing die each time I fire for the AR. Or the pros and cons of using a bushing type die. Or why I need neck turning for the kinds of shooting I will be doing. Not debating the point, just want to understand why it is of benefit. These are things I will probably learn as I read and learn more on reloading.

On rifle accurizing, it would appear that many more gunsmiths are familiar with the Remington 700 than a Savage.

I have looked at the progressive presses, as I have pistols as well, and those tend to eat up more ammo during a visit to the range than a rifle,at least in my hands). Can a progressive machine produce as high quality ammo as a something like a Forster Co-Ax press?

One other related thing. I may not be able to reload at all for quite some time. I checked www.grafs.com and other sources, and there are simply no primers available. Another post says that may change in late 2009 or early 2010. I have no primers at all, so that does not leave in a good spot.

Again, good morning Phil,
Your going to have hundreds if not thousands questions. Click on my profile to send my an email. From email we can get a little more spacific about your reloading needs. I'll answer everything you’ll ever want to know about reloading plus stuff you don’t. Once you get me talking about reloading I can’t shut up.

Will do and contact you later on today. Thank you, and all who responded, for the generosity of your time and wealth of information provided.

I checked everywhere, and can find nothing in my profile where any e-mail functionality is turned off. What am I missing?
