Thanks Greg. Regarding rifles, I will over time have at least four acquired most likely in this order. These are:
AR15,223 Remington).
Bolt rifle,6mmBR)
AR15,6mmAR)
AR-10,308)
???
The ARs were chosen because they are endangered in California, and I wanted a few before that are all banned.
I looked at the Savage because it was available in 6mmBR, in two twists, is a single shot with a robust receiver, and is known to shoot very well. I can also get a Remington 5R Milspec in .223. Or, buy the pieces and have it built. But, this may be getting into serious $$$. I don’t know.
Looking over my posts, I neglected to mention I will be shooting off benchrest bags sometimes, and a bipod at others. The latter may change what level of quality is needed for ammo vs a quality benchrest arrangement. ??? Nonetheless, I would be willing to buy a semi-custom gun that suits my shooting requiremnts, some bench, some bipod). Is there such a thing? I do expect at some point, to probably want to have a full-on bench rest rifle.
In terms of desire for “near bench rest accuracyâ€, I want as much accuracy as each can deliver, after “limited†accurizing. For instance, the AR15 in 223 is being built with a heavy walled upper receiver, that often better aligns the barrel with the bolt than other receivers. But, I do not have access to having the receiver barrel face trued to the bolt for absolute exactness. I ordered a Krieger barrel, .920†muzzle, 22†long, 1:9†twist, again to maximize accuracy with the light bullets I anticipate using at 100 and 200 yards, but did not have a custom chamber cut, in part, because I am not sure what to ask for. I opt for parts that generally deliver the best accuracy, trigger, etc.).
For the bolt rifle, it would appear from your comments that a custom bolt rifle may be needed to take advantage of very carefully prepared ammo. And that is the rub. At what level does ammo need to be prepared to extract all the accuracy potential out of a particular rifle? I get the sense that going to great lengths to prepare very high quality ammo may produce no measurable benefit out of a mostly stock rifle. Just like having a very high quality gun may not show its stuff with mediocre ammo.
I intended to buy Lapua brass and use the components suggested in the cartridge section of www.6mmbr.com. Those recommendations are largely what you are suggesting here, and am pleased with that.
I tend to subscribe to the philosophy of “buy once or buy twice, and spend more money). Do you have other recommendations for a press? Why balance AND electronic scale? Understood on staying with the more basic stuff for now and supplement as needed later. Should save some $$$ initially. $1,500 is a bit higher than expected,$1,200), but is OK.
Thank you.
