Reloading help / info

Hi folks,

What is the most useful information, books) on advanced loading techniques?

I read here on the net about barrel nodes and other very specific BR terms.

I have reloaded for 15 years, and thought I understood. Now I realize, I understand basics only.

Do I need a chrony to realize/understand the fruit of my efforts?

I am currently working on a 243 AI. Just searching for data and info.

Thanks,
Tony

taxman: In my humble opinion, a very informative, well-written book is "The Benchrest Shooting Primer". 420 pages of the best articles published in "Precision Shooting" magazine from 1982 to 1996. $25,,860)645-8776

Tony, In order to get the full message from your handloads you do need a chrono. Moreover, if you are going to be handloading for long distance shooting. FD is correct about the book. The're a couple others that Sinclair Intl sells that I have found very helpful also. You can view all their books on line, I think. Bill

taxman, glen zedikers' book/"reloading for competition" is the best book i've read on advanced reloading. i dont really care for his writing style but the book is very informative. treeman

Lynn,

As you describe the nodes in your last post, is this the "ladder" system? I take it that I would select a powder, then a starting charge weight, load one cartridge, then load another .3 to .4 grains heavier, then progress up until you start to see pressure signs? Then settle back down on a powder charge that has repeatable POA?

I have been loading 5 rounds at a time for load development. This takes more time and expense. I have used it in the past for another .243 Winchester for very good success.

Currently I am using IMR 4831, Lapua brass, Fed Match primers and 85 grain Sierra BTHP. The rifle/me is shooting around .5 to .75 groups. I am reasonably happy with this, but I feel it should shoot a bit better. I started at 44.0 grains and I have gone up to 46.5 and started to to see pressure there.

It is a new Rem 700 Stainless, Krieger 4 groove .237 bore LV 27" stainless barrel, Jewell trigger and a 8.5 X 25 Luppy scope.

The 243 AI is very new to me. First time on a tight neck rifle.

My other 243 likes H414, but I found it is temperature sensitive. The rifle will shoot 1/4" groups very regular.

Thanks again for the time & help!

Tony

Lynn,

Thank you for explaining things. I eventually get to a similar conclusion, just takes more time, wear & tear on the gun and cost.

I am in Central New York State, it is cold, but I still enjoy shooting.

This is a great site with great folks and information.

Thanks to all!!

Tony
