Reloading die question?

I just checked my Forster die, they engrave the neck ID on top of the die if it has been honed, mine shows "290" ....if it shows a number, have him save the shipping, there is nothing Forster will be able to do for him....buy a new one (recommend Forster) and have it custom honed IF all of his brass necks are the same thickness...rsbhunter
Good info,I will check it out

Sounds like you don't have an inside mic or pin gages. To check the neck diameter of a rifle FL sizing die, I have used pure lead muzzleloader balls, and forced them through the die neck using a shot piece of brass rod. Kind of like slugging a barrel. Needs to be pure lead.

Good idea with the MZ balls,I have a electric pot wonder if I just poured some lead in die and nock it out ?

To check the neck dia of a FL die just anneal a fired case and then size it. Then mike the case neck dia with a micrometer or calipers.
If you have any doubt measure 3 or 4 cases.

time sensitive?

Bismuth is used in it. Bismuth may keep expanding over time. Depends on the % in the alloy.

Instructions say to check cast diameter after 1 hour. If i remember correctly?

Looked it up.
Cerrosafe shrinks slightly during initial cooling. It then expands to the
chamber’s original size about one hour after cooling to room temperature.
After cooling for about 200 hours, the chamber cast will expand about.0025"
over the actual chamber size.Cerrosafe is completely reusable;the chamber
cast can be remelted and reused after all necessary measurements have
been taken.

Okay,i need to read up on it, think I will go with your idea ( round ball)

new cases normally have a forming/cleaning/polishing/handling/packaging burr at the casemouth.

I've had un-prepped, right outta' da box brass, once it's hammered into shape from a few firings get looser. Basically the former "tightness" came from the burr.

Winchester brass is notorious for this but they all have it.

If you run an expander into these burrs they are forced to the outside of the case mouth.
Then you can either deburr the outside of the case mouth or clean up the burrs with a neck turning tool. After being fired and resized once the burrs are mostly eliminated.

Something I have never seen or heard of? Friend brought over his forester f/l dies yesterday and wanted to no why they won't resize neck ,he has been using them all along with good neck tension and now they won't squeeze neck down. Brass is hornady and lapua reloaded on theses dies three times. Brass has not been turned but has been annealed. Neck wall thickness is about .013-.014 thick. Took expander ball out ran a couple cases with die adjusted touching shell holder and bullet still pushes in hand tight. He even called Forester and they were stumped. These are not bushing dies. Cal..260 rem. They are going back to Forester today for an evaluation
If the dies haven't been used in the Sahara then likely Your friend has over annealed the cases

Wouldn't the case neck still size down but not spring back from being to soft? He ended up borrowing some dies and brass is sizing correctly . Sent Foresters back for evaluation.

I believe he said the bullets could be seated by hand, which is .002" neck tension from my RCBS .223 die after FL sizing

.002 neck tension should turn out to be approx 30psi pressure to seat a bullet- could be more or less according to brass- thats way too much to seat by hand. .001 is too much to push in by hand most times
I agree but if the brass is way over annealed then it will size to .002 nk tension and will easily receive a hand inserted bullet
