Reloading at the range............

I recently purchased a used 6BR and have been trying to get everything together to reload at the range. I just about have everything I need to load at the range, but was wondering if there is a certain box or container that is used by benchrest/target shooters to transport and set up at the range?

I personally use a 3 drawer machinists type tool box for my dies, powder measure and other junk that I carry.

If you want a list...I don't have enough space here or the desire to do an inventory!!! Suffice it to say that my box is heavy. This is just for reloading tools.

In addition to that bow, I carry 3 hard plastic "Chicken boxes" that house my front rest and rear bag...reloading presses, I carry 2, 1 for sizing, 1 for seating. Shooting stool, cleaning cradle, wind flag poles. 1 of these I dedicate to gunpowder and other cleaning supplies like patches, solvents and towels.
I also carry tarps and clips to cover everything or to block the sun or wind/rain if it's nasty. These weigh approx 50 lbs each.

Did I mention cleaning goodies, I know I mentioned supplies, but I've got a separate 2 drawer box for other cleaning stuff.

Wind flags...Got another box for wind flags...I use a spare rifle case for these.

Fills up the bed of the pickup when you throw in the loading table and chairs.

Then there's the riflecases...I never seem to get away from the house without at least 2 full double rifle cases.

Are you sure you want to load at the range!!!!!!????????

Dang Bill..........have you considered a trailer to haul all that stuff to the range and back. :)
Thanks for the reply. Is there any way to attach a powder measure,Neal Jones) to the tool box? Kind of a one box does it all? I will only be reloading for 1 gun at this time and want be needing all the wind flags and stuff like that.

Isn't it amazing how much "stuff" it takes to make something go bang!!! Wife went with me one day and couldn't beleve the stuff I took with us.

What mess!

Hooter, Yes, in fact I have considered a trailer just for hauling my stuff to the range.Matter of fact, several BR shooters have gone that route and all they've got to do is open the doors of their trailer and start loading. I've also got a pop-up camper that I drag to out of town shoots, so it's all got to go in the bed of the truck.

I know I didn't cover all the bases, but there are guys and gals that get by with a lot less stuff than I take to the range.

Snake eye has a fairly typical setup going for himself, as you can see from his pictures.

For my powder measure, I made a stand kinda like the one Sinclairs offers in their catalog. Some folks have a plate that mounts to the corner of their reloading box and their powder measure goes there...the only drawback I found with that setup was that I had to use a very short drop tube for my powder measure.

Wind flags...If you want to shoot without them...go ahead...but,
you will be scratching your head wondering if that last shot that just didn't go into the group was the fault of the wind or was it you or your load etc.

One of the things that new BR shooters are advised is to get or make a set of flags and learn to shoot over them. Doesn't matter how many rifles you have...learn to shoot over flags, you'll be glad that you did.

Yes Hooter, it's called a pickup truck.

Seriously, if you will go to a point-blank benchrest match you will find all kinds of ingenious ideas that guys have come up with over the years. Many, me included, use a Kennedy tool box, or something similar. It will hold everything needed to load ammo and there are gizmos you can buy,Sinclair?) to hold your powder measure. Flags and stands have their own box,a plastic gun case works great). I have also made a special box that holds all my rest stuff and it doubles as a seat so I can carry everything I need in 3 boxes. Plus rifle.

One little hint - if you make the boxes small and light enough your wife/girlfriend/other can carry them without your help.

Hey SnakeEye............ sure those C-Clamps heavy duty enough? ;)
Real nice looking set-up and rifle too! I am not getting into the Benchrest matches, I am just gearing up to shoot some local Prairie Dog matches. I'm sure I will end up getting or making some type of wind flags. I have never shot this type of match so I have a LOT to learn. I hope some of the local BR shooters will give me some pointers and a helping hand on getting started correctly. Thanks for the ideas on how to pack all this neat stuff to the range. I have a pretty substantial wish list created for a Sinclair order!

Hey Hoot....
Got to have heavy duty clamps...that's a pile o money sitting on that little board! When you attend a match the shooters there will be glad to help you. In fact just looking and watching will help. Remember one thing tho, keep everything as simple as possiable. And make a list before you go to the range. Nothing worse then getting there and you forgot the bullets, powder, etc! Don't ask how I know......:D

Snake Eye is right you have got to have a list. I have forgotten every item I use at least once. My best shooting buddy wanted to use my crono last week. No big deal, what was a big deal is after a 60 mile drive, we discovered that the tripod to mount the crono was sitting in the garage. I left the bolt of my rifle at home one time. Now I load up the night before and use a check list.

How about this for stupidity. I once went all the way to Phoenix to do some chrono work. Set everything up and then unzipped the bag with the chronograph in it only to find it was my electronic powder scale!!:mad:

Well......I found a Kennedy machinist tool chest at a local tool store here in the little town I live in. As it turned out a BR shooter had special ordered it and then something fell through on the deal and he didn't buy it. Well this little store doesn't normally care Kennedy so they were will to let it go at their cost just to get it off the shelf. :D
My Sinclair arbor press and Wilson dies came in also. So I have most everything I will need to load at the range this weekend loaded up in the new box. Now if that income tax rebate will hurry up and get here I will send off the next Sinclair order! ;)It sure gets expensive playing with all these toys. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions guys!

At this time, I am not taking a scale to the range due to the fact that I haven't purchased one yet. :, That will probably be my next thing to buy.
I am using a mid-nineties version Neal Jones to load at the range. It has proved itself to be very accurate through the years. I shot handgun silhouettes for 7 years and used it exclusively for loading all the many rounds that I shot during that time frame.
I received my order from Sinclair this week and just about have my new box packed full now.
I found a local source for wind flags and picked up 5 complete poles and tops. Now if the weather will clear up just a bit...I'm headed to the range for some fun.

Chuck

I have had good success with taking my Dillon D-Terminator to the range. The wind screen cap seems to work a-ok, and the batteries last a least a couple of trips out.

When at home, I have it hooked up to a UPS/line-conditioner, and it sure has helped it keep and maintain its zero.

Sears box

This is what I carry my stuff to the range and PD field in. It is availible from Sears for around $20. It fits a VV 2#er upright in the bottom.
