Reloading a 243 WSSM for 1000yd Comp. Advice Needed.

Hoping that someone out there can give me some pointers on loading the 243 WSSM for 1k competition. Figured I should ask now because it will take me all winter ( if I am lucky) to source the needed reloading components.

Some background:
I purchased a 1K light gun several years ago in 300WSM. The rifle came with a second barrel, never fired, chambered in 243 WSSM. Spencer barrel, 8tw, 30", .283 nk. I have 400 pcs of win brass (yeah I know they suck and annealing will hopefully help). My plan is to start with some VV N165 powder or H4350, CCI br-2, and Berger 105 vlds.

Any advice that you can give about this load, bullet or cartridge would be greatly appreciated,

I would look at h4831 to. That's what I ran in mine with a heavyish bullet.

You could also try Alliant 4000-MR, Fed 215M primers, 105 Amax or Hybrid.

Before the WSSM forum went down, there was a ton of info on it and a lot of help!! I don't get to the range very often and here lately I have wanted to spend my time on the trigger instead of pulling out what little hair I have left!! I put together a couple 6.5 Grendel's, and I still can't believe how they shoot.( I love them!) I have got my 243WSSM to shoot pretty fair, and I am looking for a place where I can stretch my legs out : I don't have a fast twist like you do (I wished I did) I have been using IMR 4350,IMR 4064., and some other not used any more powders. My data is in the shop, I would pm it to you but I don't think you would have any luck with data from a slow twist. Maybe one of the shooters from WSSM Forum to give you some help!

Thanks for your input on this. My list of powders and bullets to try just got longer (not that I am disappointed with that ;D)

Alliant 4000-MR worked VERY well for me in a Krieger 30" 8 twist barrel shooting the 105 Amax bullets which were coated with hBN.

Barrel life is going to be short. Great cartridge but just hard on barrels.

I fell into a used rifle deal couple years back, chambered in 6.5 WSSM. Just got 'round to shooting it late this season, 600 & 1,000 yards. With your twist I'd stick with Berger's 105VLD or Hybrid, maybe H4350, N160 or N165, RL22, H4831sc (my favorite in the 6.5 so far) or IMR 8208XBR.

The last two are what I've used so far, prefer Hodgdon's product mostly because I don't have anything else it works well enough in. The 8208XBR's a close second though I use it for Palma & 6XC too.

While I don't use a 243 WSSM, I do use a 6.5 WSSM for F class and 1000yd BR.
H4831SC should be a good powder as will the N165 you mentioned. I know from my 7mms that N165 burns cool and is good for getting more barrel life. You will not likely be needing magnum primers due to the short case and regular type powders, so BR2s should be good.
