Reloading 6Br in a 21” barrel

I decided to build a gun exclusively for a 100m competition. It’s a fairly new animal to me. I plan to use 90gr BT Target bullets by Berger and VV N140.
What is your load development plan while reloading for a short barrel, is there something peculiar I should be aware of?

With all due respect, your combination is off.

At 100 meters, you should be shooting a true custom 65/68 grn Benchrest bullet out of a 13 to 14 twist barrel.

What made you consider the 90 grn Berger?
Twist. I have 1:8 twist and the barrel is a decent bartlein I could get access to.
I don’t have access to 1:14 twist barrel near me in a 500km radius.

With bullets of that weight you'll have to go to slow powders that won't burn efficiently in that length barrel. Then there's the factor with 8 twist where the bullet isn't fully stabilized at a hundred. What Jackie says above it's not the greatest of combinations.

I shoot berger 68's out of a 1-8 all the time, still groups in the .2's w/ varget.
Try a box befor writing them off.

This is what I have. I plan to improve my groups vis a vis my 28" 6BR at 100m.

That is my assumption that VV140 is very close to varget, so there could be a chance to obtain good results, however I have no experience with a short barrel such as 21" or 22".

Since I shoot an XP-100 specialty pistol with 15" barrel in 6BR. 8 twist barrel.

First, I have never shot a bullet lighter than 105 grs., with N140 (27.5 grs) and a 107 Smk it produces a velocity of 2390fps and averages groups around .4 MOA.

Now, it actually likes N135 better with same bullet. This is the only load I was able to shoot .2 MOA with.

With the Longer 6" of barrel you are talking about, N140 will probably work fine and you would probably get 150-200 fps faster velocity with longer barrel.

good luck with your endeavors..

I shot a 20" +/- 6BR suppressed at a few 300M local club matches this year. I'm in the "load it the same" camp. 21" isn't that short, IMO. I'm at 2,740-ish FPS with a 103 and a medium helping of H4895. If I keep that barrel on for next season, I'll move to Varget, XBR8208 or N140, as I'm out of 4895.
